THE POPE SPEAKS
ILLS OF WORLD CHRISTIAN REMEDY FORGOTTEN VIRTUES " WHENCE CAN COME HOPE?" (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). _ ... . VATICAN CITY, Mar. 24.' (Received Mar. 25, at 7 p.m.) The Pope, sneaking in Latin, delivered a homilv at the Easter Papal Mass. His Holiness said: “If at present nearly all the peonies are either tormented by war or living in fear and suspense,, nevertheless holy Easter recalls the Christian virtues of faith, hope and charity which to-day are so greatly needed. Christianity assures hope and peace to all who practice it. Massacre and Ruin “ You well know in what times we are living. Concord, between peoples has failed miserably. Treaties solemnly stipulated have .been changed, and violated. No longer is the voice of brotherly love and friendship heard. “Everything that genius has invented and study and experience produced air now go to make war or increase armaments. Everything that should be dedicated to prosperity or to greater progress of the
peoples is turned to the massacre and ruin of nations. Peaceful commerce is languishing. Every class; especially the poorer, is suffering misery. “ What is worse still is that already many parts of the land and sea, and even the skies, are stained with brotherly blood. Cities, villages and countries are terrorised, set on fire and devastated by bombardment. Innocent citizens, the old, the young and the sick, are deprived of their roof and often killed. Concord and Unity “Whence can come hope but from Christ? In the meantime, we who exercise universal paternity, pray that the Redeemer will grant concord and unity to kings, princes and Christian people.-”. The Pope; afterwards imparted the Apostolic blessing to the crowd kneeling in front of'St. Peter’s.
