LAWN TENNIS

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS BRYAN DEFEATS LAIDLAW MISS MILLER RETAINS WOMEN’S TITLE K. Bryan (North Otago) retained the Otago Men’s Singles Championship title when he defeated G. C. Laidlaw yesterday in the final of the event at the lawn tennis Easter tournament. Laidlaw won the first set easily, put up a stern opposition in the second, but was outclassed in the third set, when Bryan was right on his form. Miss D. Miller, of Oamaru, won the Ladies’ Championship Singles for the ninth time in 10 years, and. her opponent m the final was again Miss R Wilson (Southland). Miss Miller was as invincible as ever, and, although Miss Wilson played a dashing and open game, she could make little impression on her steady ' opponent and won only two games in the second set. The Ladies’ Doubles title went to Misses Miller and Wilson, who defeated Miss M. Kerr and Mrs C. J. Rawlinson in the final. . V ■ ; • ■ The Men’s Singles The final of the Men’s Singles was an interesting match to watch, and the standard of tennis was good, but in the

first set Bryan did not find touch, and in the last his opponent went to pieces and offered little opposition in the closing stages. Laidlaw opened brilliantly, his crisp ground strokes : and powerful smashing keeping Bryan -on the move. His passing shots, especially on the backhand, were superbly executed and generally gave his opponent little chance. Bryan’s percentage of errors, due chiefly to Laidlaw’s fine stroking was high, and he was out of touch for the whole of the set. Laidlaw also led 2—l in the second set, when Bryan struck form and slowed up the game judiciously. Both players were at their best at this stage, and the match was a good one. Laidlaw had a chance of taking the set when he led 7—6, but by this time Bryan was playing steadily and forcing the Kaituha man into errors. He took the next three games, his changes of pace and length upsetting Laidlaw. Laidlaw could do little right in the last set and Bryan gave him no chance to play the free and open game that carried him through the early stages. He lost length and made many mistakes, go that Bryan did not have to nlay full out to win the match. It was a disappointing finish. The Women’s Title Miss Miller and Miss Wilson have met several times in the final of the Women’s Singles Championship and the result has always been the same. On this occasion the match was typical of previous encounters. Miss Wilson tried to force the pace from the net and brought off some brilliant shots but she was met by rock-like steadiness and shrewd placements, losing point after point because of her impetuous game. The title-holder’s de-

fence was practically impregnable and she made some remarkable returns off shots that agaihst anyone else would have been certain winners. Miss Wilson’s margin of errors was too high to allow her to have a chance and |he won only two games in the match. Although the score was one-sided, it was not a true indication of the run of the play, but Miss Miller was always on top and was never seriously threatened. The Women’s Doubles Miss Miller and Miss Wilson, pairing in the Woman’s Doubles, met Miss M Kerr and Mrs C. J. Rawlinson in the final and won in straight sets. It was a bright match. Miss Miller’s steadiness and her partner’s severity at the net proving the deciding factors in their victory. Both their opponents played well, although Miss Kerr made a large number of mistakes in the air. but they did not have the necessary accuracy to win the match. They ran Misses Miller and Wilson close in the first set, but in the second they could not hold the winners, who took the match with a love -set. Other Events The final of the Girls’ Championship Singles between Miss E. Miller and Miss L. Foote was a marathon that lasted just over three hours. Both girls played with the utmost care and the rallies were long and monotonous It was the longest match seen at Logan Park for many years, and as a spectacle was uninteresting. Miss Miller won 4—6. 6—1.'6—2. Good progress was' made with the other events in the tournament and the finalists in the Men’s Championship Doubles were found late in the day G. A. Pearce and K. Bryan beat W Giffen and S. G. McDougall after a hard-hitting three-set match, and J. Paterson and E. G. Boddy defeated J C. Robertson and E. S. Falconer 2—6 B—6, 6—2. Robertson and Falconer led 5—2 and had , a match point in the second set. but Paterson and Boddy survived it and went on to win the match. Results:
