Time, lmin 40 2-ssec NOTES ON THE RUNNING ■ CLOSE FINISH IN SPRINT \ (From Oub Special Reporter) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 23. The Riverton Racing Club’s meeting was opened in dull and threatening weather; but after mid-day the weather became bright and summery. The attendance was very large, although the gate was below that of last year. The ' course was In excellent order, and provided firm and fast going, and the racing proved to be of a most interesting nature. Both the cross-country events provided good sport and close finishes, and although the Riverton Cup field was on the small side. It had the punting public puzzled, and three were better backed than the winner.’ The chief sprint also produced a close finish, and, in fact. Colonel Rouge was the only winner to score without anything troubling him in the run home. Trial Handicap Moneymore began smartly in the Trial Handicap, with Dolita and Don Roy. Ackemma. In Flight, and Slumber were slow; away. Moneymore, Dolita, and Don Roy led into the straight from Feather Boa. Moneymore was in trouble at the distance, and Feather Boa ran to the front and beat him by a length and a-half. Royal Lancer was a length away third, with Dolita, Don Roy, Red Feather, Campus, and Chantyman in that order. Waiau Steeplechase The field for the Waiau Steeplechase became thinned out as they travelled on the journey. Gay Deception went out at the first fence and Vitaphone at the water jump in front of the stand. Surcoat, Bajtruin, La Boca, Matchem, and Whirr were showing the way with a mile to go. Night Scout fell-at the completion of a circuit,’and Surcoat fell when in charge at the second last fence. Baltruin .ed into the straight, and . after leading oyer the last jump fought off Polar Star’s strong challenge and won by a short length. Whirr made up ground and finished third, five lengths away. Mount Val, Matchem, and La Boca were next. Neptune jumped badly. ’ • Aparlma Handicap Ortyx and Phalanx held up the start of thei Aparima Handicap. Ortyx was hopelessly left and Spendthrift was slow away Bay Duke was smartest away and at the far turn was closely attended by Nigger Boy, Rebel Mate and Top Row, They came in the order named round the top, and, turning for home, Bay Duke, Nigger Bay and Rebel Mate were racing in line in front of Top Row. A good finish home resulted in Nigger Boy beating Rebel Mate by a neck, with Bay Duke a

head away. Pink Bond was, three lengths away fourth, with Spendthrift, Strip and Top Row next. Lonewood Handicap Colonel Rouge at once took charge In the Longwood Handicap, and won from end-to end. Heidelberg drew up at the finish and cut Southern Sail out of second place. Aspire. Asia and Royal Style were next. Riverton Cnp Queen of Song dropped out of the Riverton Cup, and the remaining halfdozen provided a good betting race. Peony Rose at once took up the role of pacemaker, and led Mona’s Song.and Wild Career, who were racing together, out of the straight. The others were fairly handy. Peony Rose continued to show the way along the back and raging on round the top to the home .turn. Wild. Career moved up’Wto Peony:’Rose, and Mona’s Song was hot too well.-placed on the rails. Once in line for home Wild Career closed on Peony Rose and Mona s Song, and Waitoru also put in, a claim. A good finish resulted in Wild Career staying on well under hard pressure to beat Peony Rose by a neck. Mona’s Song was half a length away third, with Waitoru another half length away fourth Chirp was next. Sailing Lady never threatened danger once the field settled down. Peony Rose ran the first half mile in 52 2-ssec, and six furlongs in lmin 17 4-ssec. They broke 49sec for the last half, and Waitoru did well to finish close after giving the others three or four lengths’ start from the home turn. Great Western Steeplechase The Great Western Steeplechase provided a fine spectacular . race. Bally Brit had a life after going l a round, when his pilot came clear out of the saddle, but made a great recovery:; He.had been assisting to make the pace with Tnsox and Poniard. Gay Boa came down at the board fence, in front of the stand. Trisox‘ was carrying the field ; along over the second circuit, with Bally Brit anr McHeath, and six furlongs from home they were going away, from the others, who were tiring. McHeath . had hit a couple of fences. Trlsox led over the second last fence and turned for home -in front of Bally Brit and McHeath. Bally Brit, got to Trisox at the last fence, and in a punishing finish won by a short length. McHeath was four lengths away, and then a long way back came Arctic Starßand the others easing up. Trisox pulled up lame, and apparently developed the trouble when landing over the second last jump. He fought on gamely in the* run home. -' Visitors’ Handicap . The bracket of Islay Downs and Mondello was most in demand for the Visitor’s Handicap. Withdrawal and Gay Lancer were smartest out, but the latter f drifted back on the rails. Mondello took charge and led round the top to the straight from Withdrawal, Gold Robe. Islay Downs, Gay Lancer, and Sea Lady. Gay Lancer ran up to the leaders, but appeared to get crowded, and Sea Lady, finishing fast on the outside, beat him by a -short length. Withdrawal was two lengths’away, and; Gold Robe next. Some bumping took place after the field had travelled about a furlong. Pourakino Handicap Straightdel was ridden to the front in the Pourakino Handicap, and led Blissful Lady along the back, with Lazybones 'last of ..the Blissful Lady:, had Straightdel in jfroublc after entering the straight, and appeared to have the race won when Amelita- : came through with a good run, and Fidelis also put in a claim. Amelita kept going and won from Fidelis and Blissful Lady, with Rodeur finishing next.

THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY. (From Our Special Reporter) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 24. The fields for the continuation of the Riverton meeting do not run to any great numerical strength, but promise to provide interesting racing. A field of nine figures in the Riverton Steeplechase, headed by Slayer, who may not be forward enough to show his best under a big weight. Gold Wren had his first race at the Birchwood Hunt meeting since the Grand National meeting, when Slayer gave him. 161 b and a beating in the Lincoln Steeplechase. Poniard did not stay on in the Great Western Steeplechase. El Caballo and Baltruin will form a bracket, and come in for support, but favouritism may go to Pandine on his close second to Bally Brit at the Birchwood Hunt meeting. McHeath was going well on the .first day , until he hooked a couple of: fences. Mount Val will be running under 191 b less than he’ carried in the Waiau Steeples, apd the drop may help him to run a good race, Joy Boa was moving up when he hit a fence about v seven Turlongs front home in the Great Western Steeplechase. Pandine, Gold Wren, and the El Caballo—Baltruin bracket may be most in favour. Whirr was finishing so well on the first day that he will come into favour for the Otaitai Steeplechase, with Polar Star next , in demand, and Night Scout granted an outside chance. In the. Flying Handicap, Rebel Mate may be an improved horse by his race on the first day. .Nigger Boy is now out of the way, and Rebel Mate meets Bay Duke . on 21b worse terms than in the Aparima Handicap. Spendthrift may be next; and Strip is likely to show improvement. In the Easter Handicap, Wild' Career meets Peony Rose on 41b and Mona’s Sbng on 71b worse terms than in the Riverton Cup. Waitoru comes in on 81b better terms with Wild Career than in the Riverton Cup, and on the same terms as when they were first and second at the Birchwood Hunt meeting Mona’s Song, who finished . third' at the same meeting, now meets Waitoru on 21b and Wild Career on 21b worse terms. This points to Wild Career holding a good chance of repeating his success in the Riverton Cup, with Waitoru and Mona’s Song as next best. Heidelberg will probably start a better favourite -than Colonel Rouge in the Southern Champion Hack Handicap. Colonel Rouge holds two engagements during the day. The following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:— Novice Handicap.—Palmar. Airline, Moneymore. Otaitai Steeplechase.—Whirr, Polar Star, Night Scout. Flying Handicap.—Rebel Mate, Spendthrift, Bay • Duke or Strip. Southern Champion Hack Handicap Heidelberg. Colonel Rouge, Gay Lancer. Easter Handicap.—Wild Career, Waitoru, Mona's Song. Riverton Steeplechase.—Pandine, El Caballo —Baltruin bracket, McHeath. Wallace Hack Handicap.—Sea Lady, Colonel Rouge, Mosgiel. Monowai Handicap—Fidelis, Amelita, Blissful Lady. 11.45 a.m.— NOVICE HANDICAP, Of £l5O. Seven furlongs st lb st lb

TUAPEKA MEETING HANLON PRINCIPAL WINNER JOCKEY’S THREE SUCCESSES The annual meeting of the Tuapeka County Jockey Club, held at Lawrence bn Saturday, attracted a good attendance, and some very interesting racing was witnessed. The weather was ideal, and the track, though not particularly fast, supplied good going. The totalisator handled £4363, compared with £4922 last year, ■ when the turnover was a record one. A feature of the racing was the ability shown in the saddle by the diminutive Wliigatui apprentice A. Anderson. He piloted the first three winners of the galloping events. ■ Three of the galloping events produced head finishes, but the decisions of the judge were prompt and accurate. The meeting also served to introduce a new handicapper in , Mr J. White, jun., and his adjustments no 1 doubt contributed to the close finishes;, , V , ■ The Wingatui-tfained. Hanlon got up in the last' stride to win the main event, the Tuapeka Handicap, but Sir Hugh, if more patiently, handled, would have beer nearer to the thick end of the stake. The officials kept everything, going smoothly, and the meeting finished ngh* up to time.

The each-way favourite, Mintlaw, ran in disappointing fashion in the President’s Handicap, being at the tail of the field until the home turn, where he Improved a little to finish a moderate fifth. High Sea made the play to the top, where he was joined by Pocket Venus, while Gamos ran to them when the field straightened up. Pocket Venus did best in the run home from Gamos, with High Sea close up and Royal Appellant fourth. Kena, who became prominent in the middle stages, finished last. Great Northern Oaks There was a fine finish in the Great Northern Oaks, which was rdn at a moderate pace in the early stages and developed into a sharp sprint battle between the little-fancied Foxmond, the each-way third fancy, Classform, and the each-way favourite. Our Jean. They finished as named Foxmond, who displaced the leader, Millament, at the turn, hanging on to win by a neck from Classform. who finished in fast style from a good way back, with Our Jean, always well placed,’ a head away third. Foxsen, who was never near the leaders, came home splendidly -for fourth, followed by Serenata, Charing Cross, and Greek Queen. Brighton Hurdles The each-way favourite, Lapidarian, was bowling along nicely in front of the field in the Brighton Hurdles when he hit the fence in front of the stand very hard, but although he was handy again at the seven furlongs, another bad jump put him out of court. Forest Glow, Lucidus, Knight of Australia, and Tudor, racing in close formation, were the only ones with a chance at the three furlongs, and Tudor ruined his prospects by falling at the final obstacle. Knight of Australia outstayed Forest Glow, who was well clear of Lucidus. with Agog a moderate fourth. General Ruse crashed at the second fence. Easter Handicap Going to the front shortly after the start and increasing his lead to three lengths across the top and into the straight, Suleiman attempted to make amends for last year’s defeat in the Easter Handicap, but he compounded quickly in the straight when tackled by Black Thread and Proud' Fox. Black Thread shook off Proud Fox, but he scored by only half a head from Kathbella, who, after being last away, was flying on the outside at the finish. Te Kawiti finished resolutely to share third place with Proud Fox, and then practically in line came Orelio, the each-way favourite, Suleiman, and Valmint, who was also slow to leave. The winner was well placed in the middle stages, keeping step on the outside of Orelio as they raced across the top after Suleiman. When asked for the final effort, Black Thread responded gallantly. Kathbella appeared a trifle unlucky, while Proud Fox and Te Kawiti ran fine races. Suleiman was responsible for a fast-run race, the first half-mile showing 47 2-ssec. Orelio was always handy, but could not Improve. Champagne Stakes Lou Rosa was first out in the Champagne Stakes, but was quickly joined by Phaleron, Lou Rosa going right back. Grandora took charge at the top, setting a lively pace, and Happicoat ran up to him at the turn, where Nightbeam, Queen City, Cyllas and Beau Leon were handy. Happicoat headed Grandora, but Nightbeam came home solidly to win by a length from Phaleron, who beat Cyllas' by a neck, with Sir Cameron right up fourth. Then almost in line came Beau Leon, Happicoat and Grandora. Mangere Steeples Only four of the eight runners finished in the Mangere Steeples, the each-way fancy Royal Abb scoring easily, but his contract would have been much more difficult had Teranga, who attended him throughout, not fallen at the last jump, where he had run up to the leader Bells of Bow, last in the early stages, was second, with Gascyne third and Floodlight fourth. Fastaway fell early, and British Sovereign crashed the last time along the back when in a good position. Battle Pomp was pulled up. Onslow Stakes Although drawing the outside position in a field of 16 for the Onslow Stakes. Belle Femme displayed fine speed early, to be up with Ascot Bloom and Air Port as they overhauled Marshall Hall across the top. Belle Femme followed Marshall Hall into the straight, but could not reach the Hall Mark colt, while Volifox finished well to be a neck behind Belle Femme, with Night Pilot fourth just ahead of Dragon and Ascot Bloom, A little better drawn and Belle Femme may have won, Eden Handicap Going into the lead after turning for home. Tea Gong came away to score very decisively in the Eden Handicap from Raepata, who finished well to beat Susan for second. Joan Peel was right up fourth, followed by Mioro and Runanga, who weakened after leading most of the way.

THE PROBABLE FAVOURITES (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Mar. 24. After the rain that fell early to-day the going may be a trifle slower than on Saturday for the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Ellerslie to-morrow. If the weather is fine, however, the going l should be good, even though it may be dead. The fields are good with the exception of the Great Northern Oaks in which the crack staying three-year-old Beau Vite has only two opponents, and the racing should again be very interesting. The chief event will be the H. O. Nolan Handicap, for which there are 10 acceptors. Horses likely to be well supported include : 12.0. Nelson Handicap.—Tea Gong, Odtaa, Joan Peel. 12.45. He did not get away well, and was twice disappointed when trying for an opening. Finally, he was taken on the outside, and came from a long way back to win. Unlucky Xnvadere did not have the luck of the running in the Wetherstones Hack Handicap, and may race more prominently at Beaumont to-day. Kan Himself Out At the end of seven furlongs in the Tuapeka Centennial Handicap, Sir Hugh had a lead of eight or nine lengths, but from that stage he Came back to the field, and was beaten halfway down the straight. The Hat Trick A. Anderson, the midget apprentice in A E. Dldham’s stable, was riding in good form at the Tuapeka .meeting on Saturday, and rode the winners of the first three galloping events. Close Betting The field for the Aparima Handicap provided a close betting race, with Bay Duke starting favourite, and good support coming for Rebel Mate, Nigger Boy, Ortyx, Spendthrift, and Strip. Ortyx was principally responsible for a delay at the post, and Phalanx also gave a lot of trouble. The close betting predicted a good finish, and Nigger Boy, Rebel Mate, and Bay Duke crossed the line with very little between them Spendthrift did well to finish close to the placed lot after getting badly away. The Riverton Cup was also a very good betting race. Between the first and fifth favourite to win th«re was a margin of less than £3OO. The close betting foretold a good race. Mona’s Song did not get too good a run when boxed on the rails from the home turn, and Waitoru's final effort was fast

but a bit too late. It was a remarkably good race for such a small field. Fractious Hprs|s , Ortyx is stiU, and likely to remain,, bad at the barrier, as her dam was before her. It is unfair to the rest of a field for -a notoriously mulish horse to be allowed- to hold up a start. Phalanx also gave a lot of trouble, and both of them should have been sent to the outside. They certainly deserve far less consideration in ’• the future. First Appearance . v . " Rebel Mate was making his first appearance for the season when he went 'out for the Aparlma , Handicap. He began well but was not top well placed on the outside of two others at the home turn. He. found Nigger Boy a bit, top. good for him at the finish. Rebel Mate' pulled up Well'and should be improved‘by the race Strip,' ; " ' i ' After being off the scene in the early part of the season, Strip was produced at Riverton, where he ran a fair race in the Aparima Handicap. He pulled up well, and looks just about ready to reproduce his best. form. . Heidelberg . Heidelberg was finishing on well under 9.8 in the Longwood Handicap, but had no chance of. overhauling Colonel Rouge, who was receiving 291 b. Heidelberg may be improved by‘ the-face.• ; ■• Bay Duke ; ... \ Good track work brought Bay Duke into favour for the Aparlma Handicap. He ran a good race, forcing the ibace all the way. but only to fade in the last few strides. Gay Lancer - After beginning well in the Visitors* Handicap, Gay Lancer, on the rails, drifted back. He came with.a good run in the straight, but did not get a clear passage, and the fast-finishing Sea Lady headed him off. in. the last few strides.. ■. ■ * ; Islay Downs ' ; ' Islay Downs was regarded as the best of the bracket fonried with'Mohdello in the Visitors’ Handicap, but he failed to finish in the money. He may do better during the rest of the meeting. Lazybones ~ : ; ,< - Nothing looked better to the eye than Lazybones when he paraded for the Pourakino Handicap, but he ran a bad race and apparently is still moody and unreliable. According to reports, lazybones has been galloping well,, but was not in racing mood. Brother to Catalogue Fidells came with a good run at the finish of the Pourakino Handicap, and the brother to Catalogue should more than pay his way at the meeting. A Fine U ' • A, E. Dldham was fined £2 for anticipating the rise of tlie barrier in the Aparima Handicap.
