GOVERNMENT HOUSING SCHEME

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —1 was pleased to see in the Daily Times a day or so ago a statement by the Minister of Housing (Mr Armstrong) to the effect that the Government is encouraging persons to make applications for building loans from the State Advances Department because for his part he would rather lend citizens money to build their own homes than build rental homes for them. It has been rightly said that the home is the surest foundation upon which any decent nation can be built. I am pleased to see this evidence of belated wisdom on the part of the Minister of Housing, and trust it will be the forerunner of a new policy as far as the Government’s housing scheme is concerned, whereby occupiers of Government houses, for which they at present pay rent, will be allowed eventually to become , the owners;— l am, etc., True Bill. Dunedin. March 21.
