UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS

TOURNAMENT AT CHRISTCHURCH OTAGO STUDENTS’ SUCCESS OGHT-OARED ROWING A WIN FOR CANTERBURY (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 24. The New Zealand University tourney was commenced yesterday, and continued with boxing last evening. With nearly 300 entrants from the New Zealand University colleges, and a team of Australian University athletes, every branch of sport was included, Conditions were ideal at Rugby Park when the athletic section of the tournament was inaugurated. Most of the events were preliminaries, and the main part of the programme will be run off on Monday afternoon. Otago are the holders of the shield. The Mile was a great race. It was won by D. Shaw, the Canterbury national junior half mile and mile champion, in 4min 22 2-ssec. a phenomenal time for a junior, and a New Zealand University record. Another record was set up in the Discus Throw by J H. Opie (Otago) with a* distance of 120 ft OJin, which broke the previous record of 113 ft 10Jin held by J. L. Adams (Otago). Adams was second. Opie was helped bv the wind. . . A feature of the meeting is the competition of the team of leading Australian University athletes, including the brilliant 18-year-old sprinter. D. B. Dunn, who has equalled the Australian record of 9 3-ssec for the 100 Yards. His best time for the 220 Yards is 22sec, and he has done 24ft 6in in the Broad Jump. Dunn, running well within himself, was second in his heat of the 220 Yards, which was won by M. D. Fountain in 22 4-ssec. Fountain, who is a leading senior Rugby player, came away with a great finishing dash to win well. Dunn' won the Broad Jump by lin from N W Thorn (Auckland) with a leap of 22ft 4i]n. In an attempt on the 1911 record of 22ft B£in of J. N. Millard. Dunn leaped 22ft 9iin. but the wind was behind hi Qpie (Otago) secured his second title and record in the shot put, which was held into the wind. His distance was 40ft o£in, H. M. S. Dawson’s previous record being 39ft Uin. With only a few of the events completed. the points’ tally is as follows; Otago 9. Auckland 3. Canterbury 3. ATHLETICS 120 Yards Hurdles First Heat.—R. The mistake made bv allowing university players to enter in the Canterbury Easter tournament

as well as participating in their own tourney was demonstrated when K. Dyer, Wellington’s fifth ranking player, was beaten fairly easily by V. Jones (Canterbury College) 6—3, 6—3. Dyer had just previously been beaten by H. A. Barnett in a gruelling match. This overlapping also caused a delay in the starting of the matches, as players were occupied in one tournament when they were required for the other. Results:— Men’s Singles First Round F. H.
