ORKNEY AND SHETLAND SOCIETY

ANNUAL BALL The annual supper and ball of the Orkney and Shetland Society was held on Tuesday, when there was an attendance of nearly 200 persons. The president. Mr G. R. Berwick, and the president of the Council of Scottish Societies. Mr P. Findlay, were piped on to the platform by Mr-A. MacMillan. Mr Berwick welcomed all present, stating also that this was the eleventh supper and ball of the society. He also mentioned that the attendance showed that these associations kept the traditions and memories of their native islands alive in the Dominion. During supper a cake with 11 candles on it was cut by the patron of .the society, Mr A. Laurensbn.' - Mr Findlay, said it was a revelation to him to see a function of this class. It v?as the first time he had been present at one. but he assured the company that it would not be the last. He also mentioned the co-operation that existed between the Council and the different Scottish societies, and hoped that they would continue in the same wav The evening was spent chiefly in dancing, interspersed with the following items:—Miss’ L. Mathieson, recitations. “At the Dentist’s,” “ The Farmyard”; Mr W. Stevenson, jun.. songs. “Scotland Yet” and “Glorious Devon”: Mrs Gallaway. “Brawn John Heilan’ Man” and “Gala Water”; Miss Barron, “ The Auld Scotch Sangs ” and “Dream of Delight”; Mr Leach and Miss Barron, duet. “O. Where. Tell Me Where.” The music was played by Messrs Fraser and Hargreaves. The M.C.’s were Messrs Smith and’Sabistcm.
