CHRISTCHURCH TECHNICAL AND , OLD BOYS On Saturday, at Prospect Park, a tesm from the Christchurch Technical College Old Boys met a Dunedin College Old .Boys’ eleven in the annual Easter fixture and wen comfortably by six goals to nil. The game, which was controlled by Mr P. George produced some interesting play, despite the warm day; particularly on the part of the visiting team, which fully deserved the honours. Added interest wrs given tc the match with each side including players, Davis (Christchurch) and Shannahan (Dunedin)., who toured Australia last year with, the New Zealand school boy's’ team. In the first spell the local players; held their own, the score at the interval being one goal to nil against them, Davis, the Christchurch centre-forward, having scored with a . well-taken header from a cross by Hadley. Weak finishing lost the local side several scoring chances. Showing excellent team work and positional play, in which the work of the three Smith brothers was outstanding, the visitors: dominated the second half, arid, although, Shannahan, Duerdon and Henderson put up a strong defence along with Paine in goal, who recorded many fine saves, five more goals were regis-, tered before the final, the scorers being Robert Smith (2), Rodger Smith (2), and Davis (1). In occasional breakaways, Moir, playing centre-forward for the local side, was prominent, but was unsupported by his colleagues and the visitors’ defence repelled all advances. - The teams-were: —.; . Christchurch —Laing, Scott, Clarke; Weir, V. Smith, Harris, Brierley, Robert Smith, Davis, Rodger Smith. Hadley. Dunedin.—Paine, Duerdon,- Henderson, Rowan Shannahan, Andrews, Moir, Roberts, Sutherland, Huntley, Simpson. MATCH IN CHRISTCHURCH THISTLE BEATS NORTHERN (Special ’xo Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 23. Northern (Dunedin) were beaten by Thistle (Christchurch) in the first Association match of the, season by four goals to one. The teams were:—' . Thistle.—B. Oraw, H. McGrath, E. Hall, W. Weir, G. Ives, H. Galbraith, A. Sutherland, A. Westbury, J. Dougal, J. Anderson, and G. Harker. Northern.—C. Cadman, H. Bertonshaw, C. Henderson', F. King, Turnbull, E. Duffy, N. Buchanan, W. Gordon, D. Wallace, Perkins, and N. Gibson.',;. ' v _ ; With the sun behind them, Thistle made the pace and twice in quick succession Gibson was just able to clear. The local team kept up the pressure, however, with Oraw sending in fast, well-aimed shots. The last of a series of corners gained by Thistle was nicely placed by Oraw. One of the Northern men got his knee to it, but it glanced the wrong way,.into the net. Thistle 1, Northern nil. It looked as if Northern would even when King got away with the ball, but with, only »*ie goalie to beat he missed by a yard. Except for occasional breakaways, few of which ever looked really dangerous. Northern were kept on the defensive. They were in a tight spot when Gibson desperately fisted a shot from Oraw straight to Hall, whose shot went just over the bar. The defenders could not Stem the attack, and the game centred in front of Northern’s goal for Ives to send in a neat scoring shot. Thistle 2, Northern nil. Just before half time Harker had a turn at handling when a long-range shot came his way. but the spell ended: Thistle 2, Northern nil. The segond half opened with Thistle still as aggressive as ever, arid within a few minutes McGrath beat Gibson with a close-range shot. Thistle 3, Northern nil. With the sun now behind them. Northern were shaping much better, and their forwards staged a pretty run from halfway, though Harker deftly gathered in Henderson’s well-aimed shot and cleared. The Northern forwards were quickly back to test their opponents’ goalie again, but he cleared well. The game was now more even, and more open, swinging from one end of the field to the other. Northern were awarded a free kick for “ hands," and D. Wallace scored northern’s first goal. Thistle 3, Northern 1. Within a few minutes the referee gave Thistle a similar opportunity, and Hall’s kick succeeded. The final scores were; Thistle 4, Northern 1.
