April 27 —South Canterbury J.C Arctic Stat Arctic Star has been schooling in attractive style at Riverton. Wild Talk Wild Talk is expected to show improved form in her engagements at Riccarton. Pandine Pandine will be in demand for the second and third days at the Riverton meeting. . The Vincent Meeting The Vincent Jockey Club's meeting will be held at Wingatui on Saturday next. At Lawrence A good beginner has something in its favour on the turning track at Lawrence. Heidelberg One of !he most .talked about horses in the south is Heidelberg. He will have a chance to live up to his reputation during the Riverton meeting. Queen Beth The Gainscburt filly Queen Beth has proved herself fairly smart and speedy, and willbe in favour at the Beaumont meeting. For Riccarton : Swordstick, Hearth, Lord Puck. Roseman, Norseman, Georgia, Night Pal and Valantua are booked to race at Riccarton. \ The Oamaru Meeting A field of 17 has been nominated for the Oamaru Cup, and the good patronage bestowed on the programme should make the meeting a success. Reinstated W. J. Broughton will resume riding at Easter and will be making the trip to Riccarton. He has been engaged for J. H. Jefferd's horses, Moneymore The Cockpit gelding Moneymore, who is engaged at Riverton, has not started .in a race' this season.- Last. .season as a two-year-old he finished second, three lengths behind Dark Flight, in the Dominion Handicap, run in 49 l-ssec. Night Scout Night Scout at one time displayed promise of shaping well over hurdles. He has a fair amount. of pace, and is booked to race over country at the Riverton meeting. Dual Engagements Mount Val, McHeath, King. Willow, and Polar Star are engaged in both the Waiau Steeplechase and Great Western Steeplechase. The two firstrnamed may be found shaping well in the race selected for them. ' ........ Spendthrift . Spendthrift has a good turn of speed, but: dropped out of favour when he quit ■ when holding a good chance in the Flying Handicap run at the Dunedin Cup meeting. Mount Val If the weather should break and make soft going at Kiverton,. Mount Val would have a great deal in his favour, as he acts well in heavy going. Nigger Boy If the sting is out of the going at Riverton..it would improve Nigger Boy's chance in a race. Ortyx , ' Under a. light-weight, Ortyx should shape well in the' Aparima Handicap if she behaves herself at the barrier. Density .Those who witnessed Density's brilliancy at. Trentham expect her to make a bold bid for success in the Great Easter Handicap. She was beaten last year by Cocksure 7.1 by half a length in lmin 24 l-ssec when carrying 7.0. . The winner put up a race-record. Chirp : A repetition of Chirp's best form would make her dangerous in her engagements at Riverton. So far, this season she has scored three wins and nine placings in eighteen starts. She holds two engagements at Riverton, and may upset more fancied horses in- her selected race Turaki The Balboa gelaing Turaki, who is engaged at Riverton, has won twice out of four starts this season. He won the Hunters' Flat at the Otago Hunt Club's meeting, and fell when running at the Gore spring meeting, where he finished unplaced on the second day. won the Hunters' Flat at the recent Birchwood Hunt meeting, where, he won under 11.8 from Lochie River 11.10. Rebel Mate According to reports from the south, R£bel Mate is moving along attractively in his work and will be ready to race when saddled up at Riverton. Last season Rebel Mate compiled a good record by winning twice and getting placed four times in nine starts. His final win was-at-Oamaru, where he won with 9.4 in lmin 13 l-ssec. and his filial placed performance was a second with 9.10 to Fleet Street 3.6 at Wingatui. when Strip 8.7 was' a neck away third In the Aparima Handicap Rebel Mate meets Strip on better terms for finishing in front of him at Wingatui. GOOD FIELDS AT RIVERTON WILD CAREER IN FAVOUR SIR HUGH AT LAWRENCE

TROTTING NOTES

FIXTURES March 23. 27. 28.—N.Z Metropolitan T.C March 23, 25.—Hawera T.C March 30.—Wanganui T.C April 6.—Thames T.C. April 6.—Ashburton T.C. April 13.—Cambridge T.C. April 17, 20.-Wellington T.C. April 27.—Auckland T.C. April 27 —Westland T.C.

Moderate Form Most of those engaged In the Konini Trial Handicap have so far failed to achieve winning success. Lady Don was second to Hearth at the Banks Peninsula meeting in October, and won at the Geraldine meeting, but lost the stakes through a breach of rules. Attractive Note finished second to Withdrawal in the Trial Handicap run at Wingatui last season, and was third to Flagman and Lawford Lass at the Vincent meeting. She has had only one race this season. Homing ran a second and a third at the Cromwell meeting, where Invadere finished third to Aravane and Raroa over a mile. Foxy may prove the best of the others in the field.

Queen Dorothy Queen Dorothy, who is engaged at Lawrence and Beaumont, has been started thirteen time this season without scoring a win. She has, however, finished in a place in seven races. Included in her form of last season was a second to Kilrobe at Waikouaiti and one of her best performances was a third with 9.0 to Auctor 7.1 and Hanlon 7.2 at the Kurow meeting, when a length and three lengths divided them in lmin 26 4-ssec. In tlir Tuapeka Handicap, Queen Dorothy meets Auctor on 281 b and Hanlon on 271 b better terms. The figures give Queen Dorothy a good chance on paper.

The Australian Cup According to reports, H. Hanley, riding to instructions from J. M. Brett, the trainer of Indignity, stole the Australian Cup. When the field had travelled about a mile, Hanley shot Indignity out to the front, and before the other riders woki up he had a lead of fifteen lengths, and that was the end of the race. The success nearly came undone, as Hanley weighed in at over 21b overweight owing to taking a drink of water and the fact that the saddlecloths absorbed moisture from the horse. At one time the rules stipulated that a horse must be disqualified if his rider weighed in with more than 21b more than he weighed out, and in ths> Maribyronong Trial Stakes of 1914 Pretty Bobby, who was first past the post, was disqualified, because his rider was an ounce or two more than 21b over his declared weight. Subsequently the stewards were given discretionary powers, and the rule reads: " If a horse carry morp than 21b in a flat race or 41b in a steeplechase over the weight imposed or declared it may be disqualified for that race, and the owner, trainer, and rider thereof may be fined or disqualified."

Tuapeka Prospect Northern Sun paced well at the Cromwell meeting, and consequently is likely to be among the fancied runners at Lawrence to-day. Doubtful at Barrier Storm Chimes Junior has pace, but is too doubtful at the barrier to be recommended. ,

Worth Remembering David Direct is a useful sort for the minor meetings, and should get some of the money at the Tuapeka and Beaumont meetings.

Forbury Park The programme for the Forbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting is in circulation.

At Addington Bracketed horses at Addington to-day are as follows:—Preliminary Handicap: Anna's Voyage and Manna's Son; Chudic and Sonoma King. Fendalton Handicap: Lady Milne and Battlevale. Easter Handicap: Renown's Best and Plutus; Southern Chief and Great Jewel. Autumn Handicap: Tan John and Captain Bolt. Oxford Handicap: Aqua Bond and Nell Grattan; Donor and Repeal; .Great Don and Loyal Rey.

S.P. Betting Action The stewards of the W.A. Trotting Association recently notified owners, trainers, and drivers that owing to injury done to meetings by starting-price betting, drastic action would be taken if betting with off-the-course bookmakers continued. The nominations •of all horses raced by R. Bradley, J. Hopkins, and G. F. Thomas have now been refused, and Thomas's reinsman's and trainer's licences have been cancelled. Brilliant Effort Probably never in the history of trotting in Southland has such an exhibition of speed been seen as that provided by Gold Bank at Wyndham when he won the Wyndham Cup in hollow style. After being slow away, he tailed the field (says the Southland Times) until half a mile from home, when he put in a brilliant run—always on the outer of two and three sulkies—and came on to win with great ease, Happy Locanda. who finished second, and who was in charge half a mile from home, was timed to run his last half in a fraction better'than lmin 4sec. At the half-mile. Gold Bank was conceding Happy Locanda six or seven lengths and beat him comfortably by three lengths. Gold Bank's last half was run in lmin 0 3-ssec. While it has to be admitted that there was little Dace on for the first mile and a-half—run in 3min 32sec—such brilliant speed has rarely been seen in Southland. Gold Bank has always been regarded as a high-class stayer and, after showing good form in Southland, he was sent to Canterbury, where he failed to show his best. On his latest form, he should have little difficulty in winning his way to a much tighter mark. By Worthy Bond, he is out of Lovematch, the dam of Roselight (who produced the Winton Cup winner. Sydney Grand), Matchmaker, Gold Valley, and others. Lovematch was by Four Chimes from Bay Belle, by King Harold from Black Bess, by the thoroughbred Mainsail.

THE RIVERTON MEETING The Riverton Racing Club's meeting will be opened to-day with a card that is sure to attract a large attendance. The star features of the day will be the Great Western Steeplechase, the Waiau Steeplechase, and the Riverton Cup. Both the cross-country races have attracted good fields, and will, no doubt, supply some good, spectacular sport. The Riverton Cud has not attracted a particularly large field, but as varied opinions exist as to the possible result a good race may be expected. The following may be amongst those in f.T'our for their engagements:— Trial Handicap.—Royal Money Monevmore. My Song. Waiau Steeplechase.—McHeath Mount Val. King Willow. Aparima Handicap.—Rebel Mate Top Row, Strip. Longwood Hack Handicap.—Heidelberg. Royal Style. Moonraider. or Turaki. Riverton Cup —Wild Career Waitoru Mona's Song. The card is as follows: 11.45 '- TRIAL HANDICAP, Of £175 Siy furlongs

FINAL TRIALS AT RIVERTON ISLAY DOWNS IN FORM (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 22. The feature of the final trials at Riverton this morning was a five-furlong gallop by Islay Downs. He was ridden by J. W. Dooley and accompanied by Ackemma (R. E. Humphries), and after running the first furlong in I3sec he completed his task in lmin 4 4-ssec, the last half in 51 4-ssec. although the pegs were 30 feet out. Islay Downs was on the extreme outer, and did his work under a good hold. He beat Ackemma by four lengths. The going was on the dead side after rain in the early morning. Heavy rain fell late this morning, and the track will be on the dead side on Saturday. r

AUCKLAND MEETING (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Mar. 22. The rain that fell on Thursday was beneficial to the course at Ellerslie, and unless the weather is wet the going should be excellent for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting tomorrow. Good fields are engaged and the racing should be most interesting, the chief event, the Easter Handicap, appears very open, and fancies are likely to take a wide range, although the chances are that the three-year-old Orelio will start favourite. Orelio is trained by F. Smith, who has three other candidates—Arvakur. Proud Fox and Sunola.

THE LAWRENCE MEETING The Tuapeka Jockey Club will hold its annual meeting to-day, when the card will, no doubt, draw patronage from a widespread area. The fields bear indication of keeping to the numerical strength of the acceptances, and should provide some interesting racing Three of those engaged in the Tuapeka Handicap arc Sir Hugh, Nightwings. and Auctor. who are handicapped on much the same terms as they raced under in the McDonald Memorial at Cromwell Sir Hugh 8.5 beat Nightwines 7.10 and Auctor 7.10 in a fairly close finish, and as Sir Hugh finished best it points to him starting favourite for the Tuapeka Handicap Nightwings may be selected as next best, and Auctor if reserved for the race, would grow in favour. WESTLAND FIELDS

ELLERSLIE TRACK WORK (Peh United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Mar. 21. Rain fell throughout training operations at Ellerslie this morning, when the final gallops in connection with the Auckland autumn meeting were held, and it became heavier after the breakfast interval. The going was good, though it was inclined to cut out a little towards the end Silver Qucx got to the end of halt a mile in 52 l-ssec. She was going nicelj throughout. ' Black Thread was about a length clcai of Bronze Emerald, Tea Gong and Sigurd at the finish of seven furlongs in lmin 30see, the first half-mile taking 50sec This was an excellent gallop on the part of Black Thread, while Bronze Emerald went well for a hack. Royal Message ran half a mile In 52scc. and did it well. Phaleron, Oregan and Lambourn jumped away at the five furlongs. Phaleron and Oregan were soon in front, and halfway down the straight Phaleron drew away to beat Oregan by a couple of lengths, with Lambourn eight lengths further back, the time being lmin 3 3-ssec. the first two taking 24 2-ssec. Lambourn did not seem to be able to go with the other pair. This was his first experience at Ellerslie, and the right-handed goins was probably a bit strange to him.

Rara Avis ran half a mile in 51 4-ssec It was a pleasing effort. Beaupartir and Classform were sent over a mile. They ran the first three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. and reached the half-mile in 54sec. the full distance occupying lmin 49sec. They were together at the finish and both looked in excellent order fo> their engagements Mintlaw and Valmint were responsible for a good effort over four furlongs, reeling off the distance in 50 2-ssec. There was little between them at the end

Charing Cross got to the end of a mile in lmin 51 2-ssec. the first half taking 57 2-ssec.

Nightbeam was too good for Happicoat at the conclusion of five furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec It was an uneven start. Nightbeam jumping away first, but he was eased up for Happicoat The latter then ran to the front, and was several lengths ahead at the four-furlong past, and came home from there in 52sec. Nightbeam's time must have been considerably better.
