CITY POLICE COURT

Thursday, March 21 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Drunkenness Francis McCluskey, who was stated to have been before the court on 77 previous occasions, was convicted and discharged on a charge of drunkenness. —Similarly charged, two first offenders were each fined 10s. Assault on Wife Henry Shirley Evans, who was represented by Mr J. G. Warrington, appeared for sentence on a charge of assaulting his wife.—Mr B. S. Irwin, who appeared for the accused's wife, said that mutual seperation had been agreed on between the two parties.— The accused, who had spent a week in the cells, was admitted to probation for 12 months, on- condition that he took out a prohibition order and did not go near or molest his wife. Taxi Driver's Offence

Rowland Justus Hill, a taxi driver. pleaded guilty to assisting John Rex Grey to leave New Zealand without a written permit from the Minister of Internal Affairs.—Detective Sergeant Hall said the charge was laid under the Overseas Passenger Emergency Regulations. The defendant called at the police station on December 19 last and asked for a permit to go to Australia for a holiday. The permit was issued on December 22, and on January 18 a man calling himself Rowland Justus Hill left New Zealand by the Wanganella. Inquiries showed, however, that it was not the defendant, but a man who was believed to be an absconding debtor. The defendant was offered money for the permit, but the police could not say that any amount was paid to him. The defendant was going overseas with the second echelon.—ln view of the circumstances attached to the defendant's future movements, he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years.
