Windsor Lad For the first time in history, a racehorse has become the property of an insurance company and a group of underwriters at Lloyd’s (says an English exchange). The horse is Windsor Lad, winner of the 1934 Derby and St. Leger After he had won the Derby Windsoi Lad was bought by Mr M. H. Benson for £50,000. He was withdrawn from the stud last year owing to an infection of the head. Mr Benson thought there was no chance of saving his life, and suggested that it would be humane to have the horse destroyed. The Sun Insurance Company, who had insured the horse for £45,000, and their underwriters decided to get an independent veterinary opinion. Professor O’Connor, of Dublin, the brilliant brain specialist of the horse world, decided that an operation might save the horse’s life. The operation was performed. Mr Benson thought that, in spite of the operation, the horse would never be fit enough to use as a stallion and the matter was put up for arbitration. As a result Mr Benson received a sum, said to be £27,000, and the veterinary fees he had paid—approximately £14.000. The result is that today Windsor Lad is the property of the Sun Insuratice Company and their underwriters at Lloyd’s. "It is certainly a unique case,” Mr George Lockwood, director of the British Bloodstock Agency, told the Sunday Dispatch. ** Windsor Lad is now fully recovered and will resume stud duites this season. The fee will be announced later.”

Oamarn Juvenile Stakes Nominations will close on Monday, April 1. for the Oamaru Trotting Club's Juvenile Stakes, to be run In 1941. A Bracket Southern Chief and Great Jewel will form a strong bracket for the Easter Handicap, to 'be run at Addington on Saturday. Accountant Accountant Is regarded as a horse that should be kept In mind during the near future. A Strong Stable ' J. J and E. N. Kennerley have now about 20 horses in their stables at Epsom, where they have been for about a year. Amongst the Pacers There will be a feast of light-harness racing during the Easter holiday week. Tire Metropolitan Trotting Club provides three days at Addington, and the racing should be most interesting, as the fields will be supplied by the best horses in training. In a minor degree light-harness racing will be provided at Lawrence and Beaumont, and again on the final day of the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting. Bayard It Is reported that Bayard, who is engaged at Addington on Satm-day, will be handled by J. Pringle. Previously trained at Addington, Bayard has done his recent racing in the North Island, and has put up the good record of six wins and three minor placings for the good stakes of £2155. He ran second to Marlene in the Auckland Cup. At Addington A number of candidates for the Easter meeting were sent against the watch at Addington on Tuesday. The course was In good order, and all the horses did their work from a moving start. One of the highlights of the series (says the Star-Sun) was a contest between Royal Romance and Mohican. The distance was one mile and a-half. Royal Romance left the starting post one second in front of Mohican and set the pace to the tune of 37sec for two furlongs, Imin 12sec for a half-mile. 2min 19 2-ssec for the mile, and the mile and a-quarter was done in 2min Slsec. On reaching the straight. Mohican moved up to challenge Royal Romance, and in a good finish Royal Romance beat Mohican by a narrow margin. Both horses gave excellent exhibitions of trotting. Royal Romance did the mile and a-half in 3min 23 3-ssec, and Mohican recorded 3min 22 4-ssec. They trotted the last half-mile in Imin 4 I-ssec. Subsidy had one second start from Southern Smile In a duel ovsr one mile and a-half. Subsidy made the pace, and although Southern Smile tried to head him in the straight she never looked like catching Subsidy, which finished brilliantly to record 3min 22sec. He paced the first half-mile in Imin Bsec, mile in 2min 15 2-ssec, mile and a-quarter in 2min 48 3-ssec. and the full distance in 3min 22sec. Windsor Lass dashed over one mile in 2min 14 2-ssec. She has done remarkably well since she had a spell, Nell Grattan and Slippery Sam were associated in an Interesting trial over two miles. Nell Grattan showed the way to her companion and reached the half-mile in Imin llsec, mile in 2min 18 2-ssec, mile and a-quarter in 2mm 52sec, mile and a-half in 3min 26 2-ssec, mile and three-quarters in 4min Isec, and they coasted home in 4min 32 2-ssec. Both pacers hit out with great determination Neither horse was asked to do its best Indianapolis was given sprinting tasks. He did four furlongs in Imin llsec. Horse Powe- was given galloping exercise. Anna’s Voyage gave Premier two seconds start, and they finished on terms at the end of a mile and a-half. Premier registered 3min 29sec. and Anna’s Voyage did 3min 27sec. Both trotters made a break during the trial Bayard crave Passport three seconds start over 12 furlongs, and they crossed the line together. Bayard’s.time was 3min 22 3-ssec, after taking 2min 18sec to negotiate the first mile. Franz Derby made a break and then trotted two miles in 4min Slsec. un f| v Corner and Coquette finished brilliantly over the last furlong of a mile and a-naii. Sunny Corner acted as pacemaker, ana had a start of two seconds from her stable mate. She got down to the two furlongs in 37sec, half-mile in Imin 14 2-ssec, mile in 2min 27sec, mile and a-quarter in 3mln 2sec, and the mile and a-half in 3min 35 l-ssec. THE RIVERTON MEETING

SANTOFT WITHDRAWN (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Mar. 20. ■Santoft has beep withdrawn from the Great Western Steeplechase. He was slightly injured on being brought to the meeting, and it was decided not to risk breaking him down by racing him. With Santoft out, R. Register had the choice of mounts between King Willow and

Arctic Star In the Great Western, and decided to ride Arctic Star, although he has been off the scene for some time. There is an inclination to favour Rebel Mate’s chance among the sprinters at Riverton on Saturday. He has apparently done a good amount of work, and looked in great order when worked to-day. The firm tracks have been troubling Boaform, and for a time there has been a doubt about her carrying out her engagements on Saturday. The Balboa mare has only shown her best with the sting out of the ground, but otherwise she is in great order. E. J. Ellis arrived at Riverton yesterday with Neptune. Cherokee, Asia and Chirp. It is intended to school Neptune to-morrow, but there is no certainty that he will start in the Waiau Steeplechase, as a rider has yet to bo secured for him. Chirp will take her place in the Riverton Cup, while it Is also possible that she will be produced in the open mile later in the day. Nigger Boy has come through a sound preparation, but he does not appear to appreciate the firm tracks and gives the impression that he is cramped in his action.

Not Out A. Messervy will have the mount on Not Out in the Great Easter Handicap. Cottinghain The Grand National Hurdles winner Cottlngham has again been placed in train- , Ing at Riccarton. Bloodstock Sale A sale of bloodstock will be held at Christchurch during the C.J.C. autumn meeting. The Vincent Meeting Handicaps ftr the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting will be declared on Wednesday, March 27, and acceptances fall due on the following dav. Alma Alma is not being overlooked in connection with the Great Easter Handicap, and if she behaves herself at the barrier may take a power of beating. Sovereign Ladv Since her last appearance in public Sovereign Lady has been getting through satisfactory work on the track and seems sure to race prominently at the C.J.C. autumn meeting. Haughty Winner Haughty Winner did not live up to his reputation as a horse for a course at Trentham, and as a result has dropped out of favour for the Great Easter Handicap. Still he has displayed some very creditable winning form at Riccarton. The Favourites Density, Not Out, Nightcalm and Spanish Lad are most in favour for the Great Easter Handicap, and Capricious, Sovereign Lady and,Trench Law for the Great Autumn Handicap. Arctic Star The Great Western Steeplechase candidate Arctic Star has scored several wins over hurdles, but has yet to win over country. Arctic Star has been placed over country, and his form Includes a second to Possum In the Great Western Steeplechase of 1938 The Riverton Meeting What can be termed good handy-sized fields without being packed by crowds of non-form horses will supply the card for the opening day of the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting. Two good fields will be seen out in both the cross-country events, and they will, as usual, supply the most magnetic attraction to the meeting. A Trophy Winner A. McMullan won the trophy presented , by the Westport Jockey Club for the most successful trainer at its recent meeting. He is identical with the rider who won the Great Western Steeplechase on Gienisla, and the short- cuts he took from fence to fence at Wingatui led to rails being introduced between some of the fences on the local course. Probable Encore Queen of Song’s chance in the Riverton Cup rests on the question whether she has been sound enough to get through sufficient work for the task. On Tuesday she was galloped a mile and a-quarter with Mount Val—the last mile in Imin 50Jsec. Queen of Song won the Riverton Cup with 9.8 in 1936 as a four-year-old, and may possible, provide an encore success in 1940. Lapidarian , One of the most improved hurdlers in the north this Reason is Lapidarian, who is going along nicely in preparation for . the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie at Easter. The dash he is showing in training suggests that he is even better than formerly. A winner cf three hurdle races and £9OO in stakes this season, his future is regarded very hopefully, especially as he is partial to soft going and should be suited by the conditions at late autumn and winter meetings. The Great Western Steeples The star attraction on the opening card Cf the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting will be the Great Western Steeplechase, which was first run in 1888. and for the first six of the seven years it appears in the Turf Register was won by gentlemen riders. After a break from 1894 to 1912 and 1913, the winners of the two lastmentioned years wer~ steered by Mr W Ledingham. In 1925 Mr J. Langford rode the winner, and in 1929 Mr V. Langford got home on Snowfall. The Great Western Steeplechase has a rather unique record for so many winners with gentlemen riders in the saddle and is no doubt the result of experience in the hunting field of a good sporting district Remarkable Record One of the most remarkable records ever achieved in connection with racing .in New Zealand is linked with the Riverton Cup. The Fere gelding Victory won the Riverton Cup in four- consecutive years, a remarkable performance in connection with a handicap. F-we was an imported horse got by the St. Leger winner Lord Clifden. The Riverton Cup The field for the Riverton Cup will be on the small side, and may be smaller at the post than it at present appears on paper, as Peony Rose and Chirp both claim other engagements of minor importance. The good stake, however, that is attached to the Riverton Cup will no doubt be responsible for the full field of acceptances going to the post. At present there docs not seem to be any outstanding favourite, but at the close of betting the honour may be awarded to Wild Career. Duncannon The Inflation colt Duncannon, who has come into favour for the Great Easter Handicap, is no stranger to success at Riccarton. Following winning form at the Wellington spring meeting Duncannon came south for the New Zealand Cup meeting. won the Linwood Handicap with 8.2 in Imin 26 2-ssec, and the Randolph Handicap, with 8.12, in Imin 25sec, but when a strong fancy for the Cressy Handicap, he faded at the finish, puncannon returned to winning form at the Manawatu summer meeting, where he won the Fitzherbert Handicap with 7.6, from Night Eruption 7.4, Laughing Lass 8.4, and five others. At the Wellington Cup meeting Duncannon 8.4 ran second s to Haughty Winner 9.5 in the Thorndon Handicap, won in Imin 39jsec. At the recent meeting Duncannon fol '°wed Beau Vite home in the St. Leger and Challenge Stakes. Leading Trainers At the conclusion of the Wellington meeting the following was the position in regard to the winning trainers for the season In New Zealand: I. Tinsley 34, • Smith 28, H. Dulieu 21, S. Reid 19, G L. Morris 18, T. George 14. P. Pope 13, H. Greene 12. W Hazlett 12, D. Marks 12. D Wilson 12, Mrs A. McDonald 12, J. Waller 12 N. Dwyer 11, H. Nurse 11, H. RICCARTON NOTES

EASTER ARRANGEMENTS (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 20. Useful pace work was the rule with most of the horses at Riccarton this morning, while some of the novices were given education at the starting barrier. Density looks well after her trip to Trentham, where her form gained her many staunch admirers for the Great Easter. Nightcalm and Not Out are two other local candidates whose recent work has been pleasing. . . Capricious looks a picture, and she is in growing favour for the Great Autumn. Night Glass has two engagements on Monday, and it is not certain yet whether the Nightmarch filly will take on the handicap or oppose Shikari and Dorla in the Champagne Stakes, which should be a good race between the last-named pair, with Night Glass making further interest ** Mrs 1 A?'w". McDonald’s stable will have two horses racing at Riccarton next week. Raeburn and the two-year-old Cherry Bay. They arrived from the north todav. When J. H. Jefferd put in an appearance vesterday he had Rakahanga, Indian Sun, Areas, and the two-year-old Khurja under his care. They look in great order. Some of the Riccarton trainers who came home from Trentham yesterday are criticising the transport arrangements Horses which travelled from Lyttelton by float were in their Boxes at Riccarton by half-past 10. while those who came through by train did not arrive at Sockburn till after noon, due largely, according to their trainers, to an unduly long delay In Christchurch. Several jockeys from here will go south for the first day of the Riverton meeting on Saturday, returning home for local engagemnets on Monday and Tuesday. J. W. Jennings will ride Queen of Song, Top Row, and Don Roy at Riverton: C. T Wilson—Wild Career, Bay Duke, and Ardmayle; M. Caddy—Escort, Rebel Mate, Lazybones, and Gay Lancer: and P. Spratt —Dolita, Triple Cone, Merry Simon, Ortyx, Peony Rose, and Boaform. A Messervy may also go, though at present Chirp seems his only engagement. L. J. Ellis will be at Auckland for Saturday’s racing, and will return to Riccarton on Monday, arriving in time for the third race. His engagements here will be Disdain, Schoolgirl, Lord Lynn, Retrogression, and Capricious on Monday, also Capricious in the Great Autumn on the second day. A. E. Ellis will ride Nightcalm In the Great Easter and Sovereign Lady in the Great Autumn. H, W. Hibberd will be on Spanish Lad and Thermidor, P. Spratt on Density and Norseman; A. Messervy on Not Out and Settlement; C. T. Wilson will be on Haughty Winner; J. W. Jennings on Alma in the Easter; while D. R. Mackie will handle Lockit in the Autumn.
