CROQUET
OTAGO TOURNAMENT RAIN DELAYS PLAY Owing to the heavy rain in the morning there was no play in '.he Otago croquet tournament yesterday until 1 o’clock. At that time the lawns were in good order, and several games were finished in slightly over two hours. A heavy shower at 3.30 caused a stop for some little time, and though play continued until dark, conditions were not very pleasant. Mrs Millin and Mrs Gibson played a Championship match. Mrs Millin got in first and made nine hoops with her first ball. Mrs Gibson hit in to make three and baulked at the fourth. Mrs Millin made eight in her next turn, and the game was finished before Mrs Gibson had had more than a few shots. ...
Mrs Euchler disposed of Mrs Jelley in another short game. Mrs Jelley is a great shot, but is inclined to lake her shots just a little too hurriedly. Mrs Buchler plays a steadj and more deliber te style, and completed her 26 points while her opponent made five. Mrs Holmes (Invercargill) and Mrs Rankin (Logan Park) started off in spectacular style. After all the bails were in play Mrs Holmes made a complete round with black, Mrs Rankin followed with a rounder with red. In two more turns Mrs Holmes had blue also on rover, but Mrs Rankin could not get a start with yellow. When Mrs Holmes baulked t the last hoop with black, Mrs Rankin made five with yellow and broke, Mrs Holmes finished next turn the winner 26—16. Both women were playing open croquet. „ , , The Champion and Handicap Doubles in both grades are now ready for the finals, and these will go on this afternoon, veather permitting, and as lawns become available.
