PETROL ECONOMY

CITY BUS SERVICES FORTY PER CENT. REDUCTION To conserve petrol owing to war conditions, the Transport Department of the City Council has cut down the amount used on its buses by 40 per cent. This statement was made by the chairman of the committee, Cr Gibson, at the meeting of the council last night.

Cr Munro asked whether the committee had taken any steps to cut down its consumption of petrol and oil. There seemed to be no diminution of the bus services, and it was possible that the committee could assist the Government by curtailing some of those services. “We have 21 buses running,” Cr Gibson replied, “ end out of those there are only three petrol buses, which are in use for about an hour and a-half each day. We have reduced petrol consumption by 40 per cent. With regard to the Diesel buses, so far as we know, there is no possibility of a shortage of oil fuel in the near future.

“I don’t think we should be called on to cut out any bus services altogether,” Cr Gibson added. “The Reilways Department has shown no inclination to reduce its Port Chalmers services, for instance, and they are in competition with the trains.”
