SHORT SHRIFT
CONSCRIPTION ISSUE CITY COUNCIL’S DECISION NO OPINION EXPRESSED A swift and unanimous decision not to express an opinion on the question of conscription versus the voluntary recruiting system was reached by the City Council at .its meeting last night. An invitation from the New Zealand Defence League to have the council’s opinion on this question, which was described in the League’s letter as -a non-political one, was left to “lie on the table for 12 months.” ; “ I will move that this letter lie on the table until this day. 12 months,” said Cr Munro. “ This is a political question, and, in my view the council would be skating on very thin ice if it began expressing opinions on the subject.” Cr Cameron, who seconded the motion, said he thought the council should not do anything to embarrass the Government at the present time. Instead, it should do all it could to heln the Government’s war effort in the way the Government had chosen.
The motion was passed without further discussion.,*•"! . :,,.l
