THE RECRUITING LEAFLETS
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Your correspondents “Economists ” mention the waste of paper in the distribution of recruiting leaflets at a time like this when there is a paper shortage. It looks as if the petrol used by the planes might also be written off as waste, as I fully expected to see 100 young men join up in Dunedin on Wednesday night, after such a recruiting rally. “ Economists ” say that leaflets were handed to women. This action made them wonder if our country wants the women to enlist. Well, in this village where I live, I sometimes think I could nominate young men who would just as soon see women enlist, rather than do so themselves. “ Economists ” say, in conclusion, “ we are sure every young man will do his duty to help both country and Empire.” According to some statements I have heard from the young men referred to, I am not so sure. Referring to a letter by “Think of It,” I heartily agree with the suggestion of taxing all the eligible men who • show no desire
to go and fight for King and country, and are holding down a larger pay and safer job than the boys who have enlisted. I think it is scandalous that single men should see fit to stay at home, whilst married men, some wit* children, and some, too, who fought in the Great War, some under age and some over age, are already away overseas or in camp. Shame on these stay-at-homes, who (if you will permit me to use a popular phrase of our Minister of Public Works) , have not the back-bone of a whitebait.—l am, etc;, Black and White. February 9.
