AMATEUR ATHLETICS

SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING FAST THREE-QUARTERS OF A MILE Despite the cold, wintry conditions and the soft track, good performances were recorded at last evening’s sports meeting conducted at the Caledonian Ground by the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. With the championship fixtures approaching, those taking part were in good form and many outstanding ner formances were witnessed. The most notable event of the meeting was the Three-quarters of a Mile Handicap, which attracted a good field The race resolved itself into a duel between T. Allen, who will leave to-day for Masterton. where he will take part in the attempt on the world four-mile relay record, and L. Dickison. the promising St. Kilda runner. Allen, who was conceding Dickison 10yds. made an early attempt to take charge of the race, and in doing so had to run several yards further than was necessary. He took the lead with a furlong to go. but Dickison came at him again and went on to win by five yards in 3min 8 4-ssec —fast time on a soft track. Allen’s performance augurs well for his showing at Masterton on Saturday. Another good race was the 880 Yards Junior Handicap, in which practically all the promising Otago juniors took part. The event was won by R. F. Morrison (Cav.). off 10yds. in the fast time of 2min 2 2-ssec. There should be keen competition in the middle distance events at the Otago Junior Championships on February 24. The sprints provided exciting finishes, and the Men’s Relay Handicap resulted in a thrilling contest between the two scratch teams, H. J. Tyrie making a great sprint to faring victory to Civil Service.

Otago’s two representatives at the forthcoming New Zealand Cycling Championships were in good form last evening. O. Drury (Invercargill) enhanced his reputation as a sprinter by breaking the Otago record for the Flying Half-mile, his time being Imin 2 l-ssec. W. Chalmers, the centre’s other representative, registered 6min 55 l-ssec for three miles, reducing the Otago record by approximately 20 seconds.
