QUEENSTOWN Rifle Shooting The annual shoot for the Mackenzie Shield, under the auspices of the Southland Rifle Association, took place on the Queenstown Rifle Club’s range on Saturday last, eight teams competing. The weather was somewhat boisterous, though good scores were registered by the two leading clubs. Invercargill City Guards’ Club proved winners on the day’s shoot, though they suffered a penalty of 5 points for exceeding the time limit at the 300 yards range. Major Mackenzie, president of the Wakatipu Club, welcomed the visiting teams and hoped that they would have an enjoyable day’s shoot. At the conclusion of the match, President Mackenzie congratulated the winners, and President McChesney (City Guards’ team) replied. The shield was presented by Mrs P. Mackenzie. The Gore Club won the County Club Cup for the second time in succession. The highest scorer in the match was G. Wilson (101 points). Possibles were made by H. Redman (Gore) at 500 yards, J. Dunedin, is on holiday in Queenstown. ROXBURGH Military Funeral The remains of Aircraftsman W. J. R. Strachan, one of the victims of the air tragedy at Wigram. were interred at the Roxburgh cemetery on Thursday afternoon last with military honours. The services at the Methodist Church and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. C. 8.. Jordan. Members of the New Zealand Air Force from Wigram acted as pallbearers. Forty members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and 40 members of No. 10 Platoon under the charge of Lieutenant A. H. Webster preceded the hearse from the church, followed by members of the_ Royal Air Force from Wigram and Taieri. and a stream of 78 cars formed the cortege to the Roxburgh cemetery. The service at the graveside was very impressive, and after the sounding of the Last Post by Bandsmen W. Haughton and D. Gordon the benediction was pronounced, followed by the sounding of the reveille. Wreaths were then placed, and included amongst the many beautiful floral tributes were those from the officers and airmen of the Christchurch G.R. and Y.R. Squadrons, all ranks at Godley Fortress and Port War Signal Station, officers and airmen of No. 1 F.T.S., Wigram, Roxburgh district returned soldiers. Roxburgh Soldiers’ Farewell Committee. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor, Mr F. A. Laloli, referred to the death of Mr G. Courtier, who had been the oldest- resident in the borough, and it was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent on to (Mrs Courtier.. , The Works Committee reported that a two-inch main had been laid across Scotland street in order to supply a water service to the new Presbyterian manse and also for any future use. A new water service had also been laid in Cheviot street, from where it intersected with Hermitage street. In connection with the sound system at the pictures the manager stated that he was quite satisfied after making tests in different parts of the theatre that the introduction of two speakers instead of one would greatly improve the sound for those sitting at the sides of the theatre. He would bring the matter up at a future meeting.
Centennial Memorial At a meeting of the Bazaar Committee held last week it was decided that the bazaar in aid of the Centennial memorial funds should be held on March 1 and 2. The Borough Council advised that it would screen a picture on February 20, the total takings from which would be given to the Centennial memorial funds. The conveners of the different stalls were advised to call meetings of their respective committees to make the final arrangements for their stalls. Personal
Miss M. Evans, of Dunedin, is the guest of Mr and Mrs F. J. Tamblyn. Mr W. Strang, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Roxburgh, has received notice that he has been transferred and in the meantime has gone to Tapanui to relieve for a fortnight.
