Mr F. Waite, M.L.C., left by the express yesterday afternoon on his return south. Mr H. R. H. Chalmers, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand is on a short visit to Dunedin.
Monsignor Delany left for Wellington by the through express yesterday to attend the Eucharistic Congress. News has been received by cablegram that Dr John Dunlop, of Dunedin, at present of Middlesex Hospital, has obtained the degree' of M.R.C.P., London.
Mr R. Gardner, president of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, left by the second express yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the institute.
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Adam Hamilton) paid a visit to Dunedin yesterday, and in the afternoon attended the civic reception to the Marquess of Willingdon. Flight-lieutenant A W. Burbidge, chief flying instructor at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station at North Taieri, has recently been promoted from the rank of flying officer. Before the war Flight-lieutenant Burbidge was flying instructor to the Otago Aero Club. The Rev. L. D. C. Groves, vicar of the Anglican parish of Mataura, Edendale. Wyndham, and Fortrose, who is a New Zealand Army chaplain, has received orders to proceed to Burnham military camp as a padre. Mr Groves was formerly curate under Bishop Fitchett at St. John's Church. Roslyn.
South-bound passengers by Union Airways yesterday afternoon were Mr H. Chalmers, Miss M. King. Miss H. King Mrs W. Hargreaves, Miss E. Hargreaves, Mrs A. G. Dunningham and infant from Wellington, and Mr N. Watson and Mr K. Lander from Christchurch.
The Marquess of Willingdon, the representative of the British Government at the centennial commemoration in New Zealand, accompanied by Lady Willingdon and his secretary (Lord Errington), arrived in Dunedin by air yesterday from the north, and in the afternoon was accorded a civic reception in the Town Hall Concert Chamber. To-day Lord and Lady Willingdon will visit the Children's Health Camp at Waikouaiti, and will leave by air for Christchurch tomorrow.
The Auckland Education Board was notified yesterday that Mr B. N. T. Blake and Mr C. A. Cuming, inspectors of schools in the Auckland district, have been appointed senior inspectors at Wanganui and Nelson respectively as from the beginning of March. The chairman (Mr W. J. Campbell) said both had given excellent service for 13 years, and he congratulated them on their promotion.
Mr A. G. Protheroe, a student of Canterbury University College, has been awarded the Arnold Atkinson Memorial Prize by the Senate of the University of New Zealand. The competition, "which is held every two years, was for an essay on the subject "Present-day Problems of Population as They Affect the Future of the British Commonwealth of Nations.' The Railways Superannuation Board yesterday passed a resolution placing on record its appreciation of Mr G. H. Mackley's services as chairman for the past seven years, and of the human, as well as intellectual, qualities he had shown in that position. The resolution also embodied the best wishes of the board for Mr Mackley's continued health and full enjoyment pi the leisure he had so thoroughly earned. The board conveyed congratulations to Mr Mackley's successor, Mr E. Casey, on his appointment, and its best wishes towards him for a successful period of office.
After a three months' visit of inspection to the Gilbert and Ellice Colony under the jurisdiction of the High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, Dr V W. T. McGusty, director of medical services, Fiji, has arrived in Auckland. Dr McGusty visited many of the islands as a passenger on the mission schooner John Williams. The group that he inspected extends for a distance of 800 miles from north to south, and he travelled some 2000 miles on his official inspection.
