OTAGO BEATS MANIOTOTO A FIRST INNINGS WIN TIME PREVENTS CONCLUSION The two-day match between Maniototo and an Otago eleven was concluded at Carisbrook yesterday evening and resulted in a first innings win for Otago, the visiting side scoring 176 in its first innings against Otago's 219. Otaao began its second innings shortly before lunch, and by the afternoon tea adjournment had scored 135 for the loss of four wickets. The side then declared and made a good attempt to dismiss the Maniototo team before stumps. The visitors, however, still had four wickets in hand and a deficit of 97 runs when time was called. E. and J. W. Blakely (Patearoa) were together at the wickets when Maniototo continued.its second innings in the morning, but they added oniy 14 to the first day's score of 79 before being separated. E. Blakely being clean bowled by Overton after an attractive innings that produced 44 runs. The keenness the Maniototo team showed in the field on Tuesday had its counterpart in the manner the visiting batsmen backed each other up when it came to snatching quick runs. This was developed to a fault, however, when two of their men were run out. G. Overton, the Southland bowler, did not seem to be as, dangerous as on the previous day. but he improved later and, with V. J. Leader, helped to keep the scoring down for a spell. Maniototo's first 100 was put up in lhr 56min. Shortly afterwards J. W. Blakely was run out as the result of a particularly smart piece of fielding. G. C. McKay, the young King's High School lefthand slow bowler, was then brought on. He revealed a nice action, and his one wicket was very, well deserved. J. Hanrahan (Ranfurly) was responsible for a valuable innings, his steady play- holding the side together at a time when a rot might well have set in. He carried his bat at the conclusion of the innings with 32 runs to his credit. J. Mulh'olland (Ranfurly) was in partnership with Hanrahan for a time, but Overton wrought" havoc among the tail-enders. and the innings closed shortly before lundh for 176. Leader (Old Boys) and G. McGregor (Kaikorai) opened for Otago, and 79 runs were on the board before Leader, who played an attractive innings, was dismissed, his score of 44, including five 4's. McGregor went on to make 59 (with six 4's). T. Fraser (Carisbrook) poked at a ball from W. G. Becker (Omakau), and was caught by Mulholland, arid when J. W. Blakely took McGregor's wicket after consistent bowling A. Graham (Old Boys) took his place at the wicket till just before the afternoon tea adjournment, when Otago declared with 135 runs for four wickets.

J. D. and J. W. Blakely opened Maniototo's second innings, the former being stumped by Lawson (who accounted for three wickets in this fashion in the course of the match) soon after the commencement of play. E. Blakely gave another exhibition of his attractive batting style before being dismissed by Robertson for 19. His brother, J. W. Blakely, played steadily, but was stumped by Lawson when he had scored 24. Mulholland hit out at the bowling, his score of 17 including a 6. J. C. Kearney also lifted a ball over the fence and might have made a good score had not time brought the game to a finish. Maniototo's score when stumps were drawn was 83 for the loss of six wickets.
