AUCKLAND, THE QUEEN CITY LARGEST SEAPORT

Chosen fey Governor Hobson in 1840 to fee the seat of Government and subsequent capital of New Zealand, Auckland, the Queen City, and tie province of which it is the centre, are rich in historical associations, particularly in relation to the political beginnings of the colony. With the removal of the capital to Wellington in 1865. the development of Auckland was temporarily retarded, but before the close of the nineteenth, century it had established itself as easily the largest city and one of the foremost commercial centres of the country.
