Mining Accident When he was working in his sluicing claim at Junction Creek, Bucklerburn, near the lake, on Thursday, Mr Leonard Valpy was caught by a fall of rock. He suffered serious head injuries and the loss of a finger. First aid was rendered pending the arrival of Dr Anderson in a Mount Cook plane, which was fortunately in the district. The injured man was brought to the aerodrome and went into hospital. where his injuries were attended to.

Acclimatisation Society ' j A meeting of the council of Lake’* District Acclimatisation Society was held in the Council Chambers. ...: The secretary, Marine Department, wrote announcing the-appointment of G. C. Burgess, of Pembroke, as officer for the Otago and Lakes District Acclimatisation Societies under part II of the Fisheries Act, 1908. The Department -of Internal Affairs advised that it had been decided to limit the 1940 duck season to a fortnight and to have a close season in 1941. The council was asked .to consider the matter and submit at an early date a recommendation whether the 1940 season is to affect the whole or portion of the society’s district: dates for opening and closing of the season for different classes of game; the particular species of imported and native game that may be killed during the open season; the area to be excepted from the open season, and the number of imported or native game that may be taken, or killed by any one person in one day. After some discussion, it was decided to support the Minister’s proposal for a two weeks’ season for paradise and grey duck and to recommend a thn*e months’ season for quail and Canadian, geese, and to ask the Otago Society to adopt these proposals. The bag limit was fixed at 10 per day. The Otago Acclimatisation Society wrote thanking the council for giving permission to strip trout . at Lake Hayes for a further term of five years. The Marine Department, Dunedin, wrote approving of the redistribution of territory that has been arranged between the Otago and Lakes Societies. The decision would necessitate the drafting of the society’s regulation specifying the alteration of . the society’s boundary, or alternatively, redrafting of the present regulation defining the boundary. Major Mackenzie furnished a report on the special meeting of South Island acclimatisation societies which was held at Timaru. . .. The question of destroying eels in the Kawarau and other streams was discussed. . , , An account of £2 12s for shags’ heads was passed for payment.
