Mr H. R. H. Chalmers, the general manager of the Bank of New Zealand is making a short visit to Dunedin, Mr A. S. Smith left for Christchurch by the through express yesterday. Mr A. I. W. Wood was a passenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday.

The Tramways Rugby Football Club entertained Messrs George Maclean and E. Larsen and presented a Gillette traveller’s outfit to each on the occasion of their leaving to join the defence forces for duties overseas. The president (Mr A. H. Cameron) wished thtm a safe return and spoke of their good services to the club. The Mayor of Balclutha (Mr J. H. Stevenson) left yesterday for Wellington in order to meet Mrs Stevenson, who is returning after an eight months' visit to England. Owing to the war Mrs Stevenson was unable to sail by a direct boat, and had to come home via America.

The staff of the Union Steam Ship Company. Ltd.. Dunedin and Port Chalmers, made a presentation of :i silver tea and coffee service to Miss K Wilson on the occasion of her approaching marriage, and also a cheque to Mr L,' East on his retirement.

South-bound passengers by Union Airways yesterday afternoon were Mr H. E. Murray and Mrs J. R. Murray and infant from Palmerston North, Messrs C. McKechnie, J. McKechnie and G Garrick from Wellington, and Mr and Mrs B. Tyson and infant and Mr S. C Sutherland from Christchurch. On the eve of his departure to join the R.N.Z.A.F. as a wireless trainee. Mr E C. Armitage, of St Clair was met by his fellow officers of the telegram delivery branch, and presented by the rhie£ postmaster with a watch as u token of esteem. Mr Mclsaac congratulated Mr Armitage on his selection to the air force, and wished him every success. ______
