STUDENTS’ ORCHESTRA
SUCCESSFUL REOTAL
Mr J. A, Wallace’s Students’ Orchestral Club can always be relied upon to provide a performance in which spirit and enthusiasm are the predominant features, and there was no departure from earlier standards in the concert Riven by this organisation in the Returned Soldiers’ social hall last night Under Mr Wallace's Arm control the Orchestra acquitted itself well, and, playing well within its compass. gave thoroughly satisfying, interpretations of a number of melodious and interesting works. Opening with Petits Poneke march, a vigorous composition which was played with lively spirit the orchestra went on to give a rich-toned and attractively-shaded performance of “Lutspiel," by Keler-Bela. a lilting work which gave the string sectipn several opportunities to display its quality. The principal effort of the evening was the second part of Men-, delssohn’s “Italian Symphony,” in which the strings again achieved an excellent performance. The richlycoloured melodies were treated with effective attention to interpretative detail, the orchestra for the most part being well balanced and cohesive. Selections from Lehar’s “ Merry Widow” provided the instrumentalists with a further opportunity to display their versatility and flexibility, and in Strauss’s “ One Thousand and One Nights ” waltz the sweeping and tuneful movements were handled in attractive style. The orchestral portion of the programme was concluded with competent and lively performances of “ Ciribiribin,” a waltz by Pestalozza, and “The Limited Express,” a march by Scholes. The proceeds from the concert were devoted to Station 4ZB's fund for the provision of earphones in the Dunedin Hospital, the station staff contributing to the effort by providing the soloists for the recital. Miss Airini Grenfell, who was heard in several Maori numbers, Mr Denis Sheard, who sang tenor solos, Mr James Arthur, an accomplished mouth-organist, and Mr Peter Dawson, whose contribution to the entertainment was also well received, were the assisting artists. Mr Mark Tozer was the accompanist.
