TOWN HALL DANCE

The final of the Junior Championship will' be held at the Town Hall Dance on Saturday night, and the following couples have been selected to take part: —Miss June Laurence is a brilliant tap dancer and is well known in Dunedin and Christchurch for her many exhibitions of tap dancing and singing: she has been tap dancing since she was four years of age; with her partner (Mr Pat McNamara) she was a competitor in the 1933 finals. Miss V. Crerar and Mr W. Dodd are the most natural dancers in the contest; Miss Crerar was a finalist in 1938; they were one of the first couples picked in the semi-finals held a fortnight ago. Miss P. Hackett and Mr A. Cooper have only been dancing together for a short time; they have been practising hard and are expected to put up a good showing. Miss N. Gunning and Mr Allan Duff are having their first attempt at championship dancing: Mr Duff is a member of a well-known athletic family and a brother of Miss Cora Dpff. winner if the 1938 final and fifth in the Australian and New Zealand Championship held at Melbourne last year. Miss P. White and Mr D. Hewitt are dancing together for the first time in championship dancing; Miss White is an experienced dancer, and will lack nothing in the way of knowing what is required to win a championship of this nature: they are both tall, have an easy movement and a perfect understanding of each other’s style. Miss N. de Beer and Mr A. McCracken are competing as partners for the first time in competition dancing;. Mr McCracken is one of the most improved dancers this season, and, although dancing with a different partner, won the novice competition held two months ago and the Novice Championship of Otago and Southland; as these were not open competitions, he is still eligible to compete in the Junior Championship: he was also a competitor in last year’s Otago finals; Miss de Beer and Mr McCracken are among the favourites for Saturday night. Miss I. Webster and Mr N. Bresanello are both excellent natural dancers, and have learnt most of their dancing at the Town Hall. The judges will be Miss Lora Bain, Mr Kevin Dun. and Mr J. H. Green. The music will be supplied by Dick Colvin's band of nine players and five vocalists. A special exhibition of tap dancing will be given by Miss Daphne Finnerty, the winner of the ” Personality Girl ” contest. Spectators will be admitted to the circle.
