WHAT STALIN FORFEITED
Stalin has done more than redraw the map of Eastern Europe. He has remade the minds of a whole generation, says the Co-operative News, expressing the view of the British Cooperative and Labour Parties. Millions of democrats whose faith in Russia has survived a hundred blows now face these two facts: There would have been no war had not Hitler secured his Eastern front by the pact with Russia; there would have been a long-drawn-out Polish resistance, immobilising large units of Fascist Power, if Russia had not, attacked Poland in the rear. Russia has broken her treaties.
She has abandoned her Ideals. She has shattered the faith of those who saw her as the one great Power consistently opposed to aggression and free from Imperial ambitions. She may have gained in territory t built up an uneasy entente with Fascism. She has lost immeasurably by throwing away the goodwill of millions of wellwishers who have been her real allies in building up what they believed was to be a new State, actuated by new principles in foreign as well as home affairs.
