THE RURAL WORLD

By RUSTieUS.

SUMMER SHOWS .v-vx v~. THE 1939-40 SEASON tumirter shows for the coming season have been arranged as follows: * ' 'V . . -VI9S9 December p.-'-Wyndham, December .12, 13,- and 14.—Centennial Royal, at Invercargill December 15.—Manlototo. at Ranturly December 18.—Otago Peninsula, at Portobelllo. .. v ■ December 28.—Tuapeka. at Lawrence 1940 ‘ ;i January 13.—Blue$kin, at Waltatl - l _ January 20.—Walkouaiti. January 26.—Palmerston and Walhemo at Palmerston. March 16.—Temuka and Geraldine at Winchester. March 25.—Mackenzie Highland, at Pair lie ■ March 25.—Strath-Talert. at Middlemarch. Vann Supplies A matter of serious concern is the growing shortage of essentials: in farming Such items as hay-baling wife, .-piping, mills and corrugated iron are all becoming difficult to secure. ■ »;'-v .*• ■ Typical is the case of a farmer who makes much hay. He ordered, 6cwt -of billing wire and his firm had great difflr culty In getting , that- amount. . . Normally a< good 6'to 12 months ■took in this countryi;;.df. such lines, held between; importers, gatehouses and country :>-'«• •• Oreat Wort Volume No feWhf ,'thah 1090 Southdown ewes arid 1330 Romney ram hoggets have been shipped to Australia this year by the New Zeilancl Loan and Mercantile Agency Company’s stud stock department. Included in the Southdowns was a complete Walrarapa flock of 400 ewes;. The Romneys ware principally flock rain hoggets, for which there has been, a tremendous demand In Australia tills season. 'They were mainly modestly-pjclcfed consignments. The big shipments by this and other firms should lower entries of our ram; fairs In. New York and tend to stiffen the" market. Fait Lamb Sires With the 1 demand by the British Government for a heavier lamb, New Zealand breeders have' been turning their Ideas to the Dorset Horn and Suffolk breeds, From Southland,-:one firm of agents hasreceived orders for 35 Suffolk rams, and from Auckland. ,20 Dorset Horn rams have been ordered;" Corrledales for Victoria Mr N. A. Bowman, sheep expert attached to the Victorian- Department of Agriculture, who during his recent visit to the Dominion was greatly Impressed by the New Zealand stud sheep, has now placed a further order with the stud stock department of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. This Is for seven Corrledale stud cures from the “ Bonnyrigg ” Stud of Mr C. H. S. Johnston, of St. Andrews—which sheep Mr Bowman noted during an: inspection of Mr Johrlston’s Hack. The ewbs are of various ages and are of true Corrledale type, being low-set, good-headed sheep, carrying dense heavy fleeces showing character from skin to: tip. These sheep are much lower aet/and better conr foxmatloned than theAuiitl'allap type Cor* rltidale, and it la, Mr; Bowman’s opinion, that an infusion of the best New Zealand blood would be benefiolilx to most Australian studs. •

HARM AND STATION NEWS

Unregistered Sheep Exports Following on the passing by Order-ln-Councll of a Bill to prevent the export of unregistered sheep from New Zealand, Mr Lee Martin (Minister of Agriculture) stated that this exportation of inferior sheep had been a matter of concern for all breed societies and breeders in this Dominion Advice has now oeen received from Australia that a New Zealand breeder controlling studs of different-' breeds, has recently been instrumental In .shipping over large consignments of flock. Romney Marsh rams. With some of these rams there (s no means of identifying their breeding. This, It is stated, is not at all in the interests of the Romney Marsh breed, and will certainly not have a good influence on the demand for New Zealand stud Romneys which are at the moment meeting with a ;ready sale.

F.yelands for Export For many years the Ryeland sheep did not enjoy widespread popularity, but of -recent years this breed has met with a more general demand. New Zealand breeders have each year made considerable sales of both ewes and rams to Australia, and It can be definitely stated that Ryeland sheep command higher average prices than any other breed sold to Australia A considerable sale of selected stud two-tooth ewes at a price well above the- average has been completed by the s'tud stock department of Wright. Stephenson and Co., Ltd. The transaction embraces', ■■'the selection from the following breeders of stud ewes for a noted New South Wales breeder. Seventy-five-, will be selected from the “ Walpuna ” Stud of :'T.; A.- Stephens. Forty from the Punchbowl” stud of H. J. Andrew, Maheno, •and 20 each from Messrs Joseph and John Eirooks, of Canterbury. Thirty from Mr J,.Rldd, of AShhuist, for the same breeder; . went forward this week, making a total of 185 in all. Surprising Corrledale Wool Of particular interest to members of the Corrledale Sheepbreeders’ Association, and also in general, as showing the very satisfactory reaction of this breed to the unusual seasonal conditions, is the manner in which Corriedale clips are opening up on the various floors in Melbourne (says the Australasian). Authoritative comment on the position, made by Mr S. N. Houston. head valuer of Dalgety and Co., Is particularly illuminating. Mr Houston, in, describing certain Corriedale clips as 44 amazing ” and as 44 some of the most lovely samples of wool a man could 1 hope to- See,” said that so satisfactory had Corrledales withstood the effects of the ;p.ast woolgrowing season that he was confident an examination of the wool and comparison of the various clips would lead to a booin' In Corriedale sheep. There was an almost total absence of any mushiness In the back wool of the ■dips, referred to Samples of these clips, now om view in the Melbourne office of trie Australian Corrledale Association, are the best endorsement of Mr Houston’s expressed opinion, providing clear indication that the Corriedale breed is worthy pi.' every encouragement in the best Interests of the wool Industry. Distribution of Wool Considerable anxiety has been felt In wool trade circles i, In England because, according to rumour, the authorities in control Of wool affairs are likely to restrict the distribution of supplies for civilian .purposes. Apparently there is little cause for concern ■ln this respect, however. Dealing: with the- subject in a special announcement, the Department of the International Wool Secretariat (London) saiys that' the currency of rumours regarding the Inadequacy of stocks of ■wool merchandise and the probability of •Slave restriction has been brought to its notice, . Inquiries made by the secretariat have revealed a reassuring position so far as immediate supplies of wool merchandise are concerned. So far as can be ascertained. .contracts for quick delivery continue to be placed and accepted without difficulty. Considering the Inevitable disruption caused by the shock of war, evacuation, etc.,, trade and industry proved to be remarkably. elastic, and the Immediate future seems to be quite clear. Although no official pronouncement has been published as to how much of wool textile machinery production will be devoted to civilian requirements in the future, it may be considered certain thal the British ■ Wool Control will no( Impose any but absolutely essential restrictions, which will cause a minimum of disorganisation to trade. The personnel of the Wool Control, - all men who are leaders of the wool textile industry and who know all the requirements of the Industry, gives added confidence in the declared policy of the Government being carried out in the most efficient manner.

NATURE'S CYCLE MINERAL SUPPLY IN SOIL SALE OF STOCK MEANS LOSS If Nature’s cycle of mineral circulation from soil, through plants to animals and back to soli again, was undisturbed, the mineral supply in the soil would be maintained. In practice, however, the natural mineral cycle is not completed. , The sale of crops, live stock and milk from farms represents a loss of minerals from the soil which, If not balanced by an equivalent return in some other, forms, must eventually'result in soil depletion. So far as soils and crop plants are concerned, a variety of deficiencies is possible, depending on the original mineral content of the soil and the losses suffered during the time It has been under cultivation. What bearing some of these soil- deficiencies may have on animal nutrition • is not known,, but their possible significance should not be overlooked. Phosphorus is one of the first of the mineral nutrients to become deficient in cultivated soils. It is well understood that, In most soils, the total supply of phosphorus is considerably less than that of. nitrogen, potassium, calcium, or magnesium, writes an English authority. Drain on Phosphorus Experiments have shown, states the same authority, that phosphorus is taken up in large amounts from the soil during the early growth of the plant. The maintenance of an adequate supply of phosphorus, in a readily available form, is thus a critical factor in the normal nutrition of the plant. If the available phosphorus supply is reduced to a level insufficient to meet the needs of a rapidlygrowing crop, phosphorous deficiency results, even though the total supply in the soil may be considerable. Loss of available phosphorus from the soil by leaching is negligible. The serious losses result from crop removal. Depletion of soil, phosphorus results from failure to replace the losses, either directly or through the medium of the manure produced from feeding the crops to livestock. Under the best conditions of British livestock farming It is estimated that not more than three-quarters of the phosphorus in the feed and bedding is recovered in the manure. EARLY KILLINGS OF LAMBS SEASON OPEN IN GISBORNE DISTRICT About 10,000 lambs, the first of the new season, were slaughtered at the Kaiti freezing works, near Gisborne, last week. Included in the total were a few sheep. The quality is reported to be of the best, most of the carcasses being in the prime Southdown class, with a few prime crossbreds. Weights have been about average for this time of the year, running mainly around 331 b. When the new season opened the refrigeration chambers at Kaiti were still holding a portion of the old season’s meat, but arrangements have been made to have all of this cleared out by .• the week-end, leaving the chambers entirely free for the new season’s supplies. With the recent enlargement of the freezing space, Kaiti can hold considerably more than 60 per cent, of total estimated killings tor the whole season. !some comment has been made In the district about the difference of gd a lb in lamb buying rates here and those in centres near main ports. In the past the margin had been 4d, as a result of the difference in freezing charges in Gisborne and those in larger centres, and it is pointed out by buyers that this did not cover the full extent of the variation resulting in the revision of the schedule following the anriouncement of Government payments.

BURNSIDE STOCK SALE I CATTLE AND SHEEP EASIER GOOD PRICES FOR FAT LAMBS A yarding of 289 fat cattle was penned for yesterday’s sale at Burnside, as against 343 forward last week. With the exception of three to four consignments of prime heavy bullocks, the bulk of the entry consisted principally of medium weight bullocks, with the usual percentage of cows and heifers. The market was an erratic one, and prices generally for heavy and medium-weight bullocks can be quoted 10s to 15s easier, while cows and heifers were on the average a shade firmer than last sale’s rates. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £2O 17s 6d. prime heavy £l7 15s to £lB 12s 6d, prime £l4 17s 6d to £l6 12s 6d, medium £l3 to £l4 ss; extra prime heavy cows and heifers to £l4 17s 6d, prime £ll 12s 6d to £l2 17s 6d, medium £9 7s 6d to £lO 12s 6d. light from £7. There was a fair-sized entry ol store cattle, and these met with very keen competition, and forward condition steers brought up to £l3 7s. A yarding of 13£ fat lambs was forward, the quality generally being very good. Competition was again keen, and prices were fully up ic last week’s good sale. Best lambs made to 34s 9d. good 28s to 30s, medium 23s to 255. A yarding of 1549 fat sheep was penned, the bulk of the entry consisting of shorn sheep With the exception of three to four consignments of prime quality wethers, the bulk of the yarding was comprised principally of medium-weight sheep with ewes in preponderance. The market for prime quality wethers opened on a par with last week’s average rates, but as the sale progressed there was a decided easing, with prime quality sheep of both sexes showing a drop of Is 6d to 2s per head. Light-weight sheep showed a bigger decline, and in some cases were 2s 6d to 3s below the average rates of last week and over the concluding races sales were hard to effect, even at these reduced rates.. Butchers again showed a preference for shorn sheep, and woolly sheep were neglected. Extra prime heavy shorn wethers-brought to 355, prime 30s to 32s 9d, medium 27s to 28s 9d, light 23s 3d to 25s 3d, prime heavy shorn ewes to 295. heavy 24s to 25s 9d. medium 19s to 21s, light from 15s 3d. There was a medium entry of fat pigs, 151 being forward. Competition was not as keen as at last week's sale, and prices all round were easier by 5s per head. Heavy baconers made to £4 15s, medium £3 15s to £4 ss; heavy porkers to £3 10s. light from £2 10s upwards. There was a medium entry of store pigs, 76 being penned, and these were firm on last week’s rates. AGENTS’ REPORTS FAT CATTLE Stronach, Morris and Co., Ltd., sold: For A. S.
