OBITUARY
MR HORACE E. NIVEN (Special to Daily Times) INVEJICARGILL, Nov. 23. The death occurred yesterday at the age of 78 of Mr Horace Edwards Niven. For many years Mr Niven was a wellknown figure in the public life of Southland, having been a member of several local bodies. He was bookkeeper for the New Zealand and Australian Land Company before the Edendale estate was sub-divided. He was appointed clerk to the Edendale Town Board when that body was first formed, and retained that position until recent years, when he resigned, owing to ill-health. He was secretary to the Edendale Dairy Factory Company when it was taken over by the farmers from the Land Company in 1903, and continued in office until November, 1934. He had an intimate knowledge of farming, and was one of those interested in the development of the frozen meat trade. He also recognised the potentialities of dairying in Southland when the industry was in its infancy. Mr Niven was first elected to the 'Southland Hospital Board as the representative of the Southland County in November, 1914, and served continuously on the board for 23 years. He was acting-chairman on two occasions. He was granted 12 months' leave of absence in November, 1934, and went for a trir> to Britain, returning in 1935. Owing to ill-health, he was granted further leave of absence from the bonrd, but resigned on September 16. 1937. While he was a member of the Hospital Board he was a keen advocate for the project of building a new hospital at Kew. He was also a member of the Southland Education Board for some years, and was one of the original members of the Southland War Funds Association. He was a keen Freemason, and was a member ff Lodge Mokoreta for many vears. His wifp died over five years ago. There was no family. The death has occurred of ViceAdmiral Guepratte, commander of the French Fleet at the Dardanelles in the last war. KING OF BUGANDA (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 22. The death is announced of the Kabaka (King) of Buganda. Sir Dandi Chwa 11, Kabaka of Buganda, who was born in 1896, served in the Great War on the staff of the Commanding Officer of the Lake Detachment. He was knighted by Britain in 1925. Buganda is a province in Uganda and is recognised as a native kingdom. MRS L. B. REYNOLDS LONDON, Nov. 22. The death is announced of the novelist and story writer, Mrs Louis Baillie Reynolds (G. M. Robins).
