THE NATIONAL PARTY
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —While perusing the columns of your newspaper I came across a letter under the heading of “Good English Money” written by a gentleman signing himself “ Importer.” While not desiring to enter into his discussion on the money question I wish to comment upon the concluding paragraph of his letter, which reads: “ I believe that the country is heartily sick of the Labour Government, and there would be a chance of doing something if the Beggs and the Hamiltons would gracefully retire from the National Party.” Now, Sir, why should the Beggs and particularly the Hamiltons resign from the National Party? Men who have stuck to their guns and taken the smacks in the face which the friends of “Importer" have been so ready to give, have every right to be retained in the National Party. Why should any man be ousted from a position that he has successfully occupied because political turncoats, who incidentally were Labour supporters until such time as the import restrictions affected them—i.e.. touched their pockets—finding that conditions do not suit them, are now running into the arms of the National Party rather like a bewildered child sheltering under the arms of its mother? If “ Importer ” docs not like the people in the National Party let him go back to where he belongs, back to the parly which told him from the election platforms last October that nothing like this was ever going to happen, back to the parly that has misled him and betrayed the trust of the people. Yes, there is a place for “ Importer ” with the “ Man in the Street.” His cries are a little late and —shall we say?—in his case, quite bad form. He should sit up and take what’s coming to him like a man, or show fight, and not attempt to belittle those that are fighting.—l am, etc.. Also an Importer.
