TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel FIXTURES November 7,9, 10.—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. November 23. 25.—Forbury Park T.C. December 2.—Wairio T.C. December 2.—New Brighton T.C. December 2.—Waikato T.C. December 9.—Waikato T.C. December 16.—Timaru T.C. December 26.—Ashburton T.C. December 26 27.—Westport T.C. December 26.—Gore T.C, December 27. 29, 30.— Auckland T.C. December 29. —Reefton T.C. A Good Mark Southern Chief, who won In 4mtn 20 l-ssec at Oamaru, is on 4min 31sec In the Canterbury Handicap. A Good Trio It is probable that F. J. Smith’s team for Addington will consist of Sandusky, Nell Volo and Josedale Grattan. Wlnton Juvenile Stakes Nominations are due to-day for the Winton Juvenile Stakes of 1941. Early Favourites Early favourites for the New Zealand Cup are Fine Art, Lucky Jack and Lawn Derby. The last-named is on his way to New Zealand, and on arrival at Addington will be quartered at Edinburgh Lodge Josedale Grattan More than average interest will be taken in Josedale Grattan’s efforts at Addington, and the American-bred pacer is assured of a strong following. Too much notice should not be taken of his Wellington defeat (says an exchange), for he met in Blaydon one of the finest green pacers of recent years, Both horses will measure strides at Addington. Lawn Derby Lawn Derby is due from Australia and, judging by his recent performances at Melbourne, he should be right on the top of his form when Cup day comes round. Two seasons ago Lawn Derby won the President’s Handicap at Auckland in 4.17 3-5, defeating Lucky Jack by a head. A repetition of that performance should leave him with a rare chance in the big event, in which he is only required to concede up to 36yds start. The Kewple Line One of the most popular wins was that of J. Gee with Kewpie’s Queen, a five-year-old daughter of Peter Bingen and the prolific producer Kewpie, seven of whose progeny of eight to race are winners. The non-winner is Kewpie’s Bingen, who has earned £240 in place money Kewpie’s Queen and Kewpie’s Bingen are full relatives, and the other Kewpie products are Kewpie’s Guy who has a fine-looking two-year-old by Jack Potts. Kewpie’s Triumph Kewpie’s Bond, dam of Bold Venture. Kewpie’s King, Kewpie’s Crest and Kewpie’s Jewel The record of Kewpie, a daughter of Petereta, is one that will take some beating. Nell Volo A feature of the Auckland Trotting Club's spring meeting was the return to form of the good trotting mare Nell Volo, and the high-class displays she gave from marks that appeared to give her little chance of even being in the money. From ISGvds behind in the Mountain Handlcan

Nell Volo went out smartly, and with a fast run was almost with the leaders at the six-furlong post, eventually to finish fourth in 3.24, her time from post to post being 3.21. In the Hillsboro Handicap, two miles, she was slow to get going from 168yds behind, taking 20sec to reach the actual post. Gradually making up leeway, and trotting in perfect style, Nell Volo finished third in 4.32 1-5 her time from post to post being 4.26 1-5. Nell Volo and her trainer-driver, F J. Smith, were accorded an ovation. The performances of Nell Volo after a spell of four years until the August meeting, give the impression that she will attain her former high standard, and race prominently at Addington next month. All going well, Nell Volo may attempt to break the 2.3 2-5 mile record of Worthy Queen, at the Auckland summer meeting. Qualified Two horses. Red Flush and Bayard, became eligible by their wins at the recent meeting at Epsom for the Auckland Centennial Gold Trotting Cup, of £I4OO and gold Cup valued at £IOO, limit 4.31, as horses assessed on 4.32 or better may compete. Red Flush won the Jellicoe Handicap off 4.34 in 4.32 1-5, making his own pace throughout and running the first mile in 2.23 3-5. Bayard, off the same mark, was third in 4.33, In the Labour Day Handicap, Bayard. 4.34, also led throughout, although he set a faster pace over the first mile in 2.18, and just held on to win from Red Flush, 4.32, who ran 4.25 2-5. Incidentally, both pacers made their fastest times in the Labour Day Handicap. Bayard was trained last season by M. Stewart, who has Red Flush, but is now under the care of J. Gee. for whom he was capably driven by K. Bell. Bayard and Red Flush should help to add interest to the Auckland Cup contest, says Abydos, as should Sandusky, who was placed each day, and Uenuku, third in the Remuera Handicap. Sandusky and Uenuku did not disturb their mark of 4.31. The limit should suit most of the best of the local horses and some good ones from the south.
