TRANSPORT LICENSING

GOODS SERVICES UNDER REVIEW STRIVING FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY The concluding day of the of the No. 4 Transport Licensing Authority yesterday was taken up with the reviewing of existing licences in an endeavour to secure greater economy in the services and to eliminate any unnecessary duplication. The holders of goods services licences were required to furnish proof that their services were necessary and were being run efficiently. Mr V. Raines presided. " In the existing state of national emergency every phase of the nation s activities has to be directed towards the single objective of placing all of the resources of New Zealand at the disposal of Britain, said Mr Raines. “In this connection X wish to make it clear that, although the conservation of petrol may be one of the reasons for the review of goods service licences competing with the railways, the main reason is the desirability, while we are at war, of eliminating every possible form of waste. This waste may take the form of unnecessary duplication of services and railway losses due to non-essen-tial competition.” Exlstlng> Licences Reviewed Eight goods service licences of the Railways Department were under review.
