RACING AND TROTTING

WHANGAREI ACCEPTANCES

BANKS PENINSULA MEETING PASSAFORM IN FAVOUR SWORDSTICK A POSSIBILITY

. The Held for the Buchanan Memorial Handicap, to be run to-day at the Banks, Peninsula meeting, should provide an Interesting race. On her form last spring Sovereign Lady would be entitled to start favourite.. She was seen out in only six races last season and scored a win, a second and a third. She won the Riccarton Handicap with 8.7 in Srnln 52 2-ssec from Lady Montana 8.3, Happy Night 7.7, and others, including Wild Chase 9.4 and Rabble 7.7. Wild Chase 8.8 and Lady Montana beat her ii\ the Fendalton Handicap when carrying;, 8.4, Dictate 8.5 being unplaced. Padishah 8.8 beat her with 8.2 in the Metropolitan Handicap, in which she appeared to suffer interference from the riderless Argentic. Dictate 7.13 was amongst the unplaced lot. She was unplaced in the Otago Handicap run In heavy going, and unplaced in the Midsummer Handicap, her last race of the season. Sovereign Lady ran unplaced at the Ashburton spring meeting, and on her best form would be very hard to beat. Passaform in the Ranfurly Handicap dead-heated with Nightwings, and should be able to account for Spartan, whom he meets on 21b worse terms. Dictate ran fairly well at Trentham and may make a bold bid, but Rabble finished In front of him in the Watkin’s Handicap, and should do so again, as he Is coming on. Swordstick is entitled to strong consideration on his second to Wardress in the Teschemaker Handicap. He also should be able to again account for Spartan. The best of the others may be Capricious, who ran two good, but unlucky, races at Trentham. The following may be amongst those fancied:— .. „L: Okains Trial Stakes.—l,ady Don, Nigella, Airline. ?i Kaltuna High-weight Handicap.—Shanghai Lily, Knight Commander, Twenty Grand. , Duvauchelje Handicap. RACING NEWS By Sentinel FIXTURES October 28.—Banks Peninsula R.C October 28.—Rangitikei R.C. November 3, 4.—Whangarei R.C, November 4.—Otautau R.C. November 4.—Napier Park R.C November —Stratford R.C. November 4. 6. 8. 11.—Canterbury J.C The Crowd About 20,000 people witnessed the final card of the Wellington spring meeting. New Zealand Cup Meeting Pinal payments and acceptances for the; New Zealand Cup meeting are due on Monday Taxes The taxation payable over the Wellington spring meeting amounted to about £20,000. Brunhild Brunhild, who would have been a possibility for the Stewards’ Handicap, is In'the same stable as Beaulivre. The Stewards’ Beaulivre holds an isolated position as favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap. Disdain, Globe Trotter and Sleeveless are next in* a bracket. Improvident Improvident shaped well enough at Timaru to suggest that he may run a good race at the Banks Peninsula meeting. Spring Plate Recent. winners engaged in the Spring Plate, to be run at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Include Wings of Song, Sternchase, Anita Foe, Duncannon, Chirp and Raeburn. It will not be an easy race for the winner. New Zealand Cup ; Royal Chief, Centrepoise and Lady Furst are linked as favourites for the New Zealand Cup. The second line Is formed by a group consisting of Arctic King, Peerless, Passaform, Thermldor and Yours Truly. At Randwlck The meetings held at Randwlck by Tattersall’s Club and City TattersalTs Club may be wiped out as a result of the extinction Of meetings held on a proprietary basis. Both clubs pay the Australian Jockey Club £SOO per day for the use of Randwlck. The Racing Commission holds that all meetings held at Randwlck should be under the sole jurisdiction of the Australian Jockey Club, One Start Although the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting extends its attractive programme over three days, it is apparently too long for some owners whose horses appeared only once. The horses restricted to one race Include Old Bill, M(ss Hallomet, Lord Cavendish, Raeburn, Lady Montana, Windsor Chief, Enrich, Hakahanga, Cetewayo, Colonel Bogey and Taurangl. More Ground There is nothing engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap that can beat Disdain and Density for speed, but they do not carry it far enough •at present. According to track reports-, • both go fast over four or five furlongs in their work, but so far it Has failed to carry them over six furlongs. Perhaps an alteration in their track work, more ground and legs speed, would make them more dangerous over the Stewards’ Handicap course. Nlghtbeam According to the opinion of one who saw him race at Auckland, Nlghtbeam is the best two-year-old seen this season, The opinion was, however, expressed by one who participated only in the final day at Trentham. It is stated that Nightbeam fought his way through to get up and win the Musket Stakes in 60. 4-ssec. Nlghtbeam is a bay colt by Night Raid from Lady Burleigh, by Paladin—Tormentor, by Martian—Torquato, by Sir Archibald. Nightbeam’s record is one start, one win. Lady Burleigh is now at Mr Ken Austin's stud, and is represented by a yearling filly and has a filly foal at foot by Solicitor-General. First Appearances Lord Lynn, engaged in the Halswell Hack Handicap, la a three-year-old gelding by Lord Warden from Knocklyn, dam of Knookfln and Normal. He cost Mr J. R. McKenzie 576gns as a yearling! and this will be his first race. He will be bracketed on the machine with Passenger. King’s Toast, also a three-year-old, by Hunting Song from Smoke Concert, dam of Ringing Cheer and Gallant Fox, will also make his first public appearance in the Brackenfield Hack Handicap. He cost Mr McKenzie 325gns as a yearling Both horses are in F. D. Jones’s stable, and have been shaping well in their , track work, but will probably require some racing. Riders at Banks Peninsula The following riding engagements have been made:—L, J. Ellis, Nigella, Asia, Passaform, Schoolgirl, Toro Koura: C. T. Wilson, Scold, Paper Slipper, Puella. Sovereign Lady; A. G. Parsons, Jed Forest, Studiey Royal, Royal Lassie; H. W Hibberd, Pink Lad. Sweet Mystery: A. Messervy—Omapo, Spartan, Montessa, Lord Lynn; R. J. The Unknown Lot Several little-known horses will contest the Okain's Trial Stakes at Motukarara. Coup d'Etat Is a three-year-old gelding by Nightmarch from NJazone, owned by Mr A. Loutsson, and Omapo la a three-yeai*-old gelding by Nightmarch from Azalea, thus a brother to Haerepo, both being trained by P. Mason, who bred and owns Omapo. Ham Way is a three-year-old gelding by Iliad from Entreaty, dam of Phar Lap and Is trained by J. Young, who was recently granted a licence to train gallopers: Kilcato is a three-year-old gelding by Pink Coat> from Kilrls, and is trained for Mr P Campbell by C. Davoy; Sweet Mystery is a three-year-old filly by Lord Warden from Satisfy, and is trained bv F D. Jones for Mr C. Holdsworth; The Dictator is a three-year-old gelding by Night Raid from Ma Mle, and is trained for Mrs M. H. Tripp, of South Canterbury, by F. Roberts, and Puella is a two-year-old filly (the only one of her age in the race) by Bulandshar from Monette, dam of Centrepoise, and Is trained by H. Davies for Mr R. L. McCormack. of New Brighton. Derby Trial , The Riccarton Handicap, rim over nine furlongs on the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, has generally been regarded as a good trial for the New Zealand Derby. In 1926 Commendation 9.9 beat a good handicap horse in Footfall 9.6, and put up one of the best Derby trials ever seen He won the Derby, and should also have won the Stead Gold Cup. but his final run was left too late. In 1934 Sporting Blood 8.11 paved the way to success in the Derby by beating Cricket Bat 9.3 in the Riccarton Handicap in Imln 51 4-ssec This year Beaulivre is favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap with 8.10 and will take no end of beating, but some of the old-timers would not have the big sprint as a final race prior to being saddled up for the classic Stepnlak won the Stewards’ Handicap with 7.10 and followed on by beating the New Zealand Cup winner St, Hippo in the Derby Bon Reve 8.8 dead-heated with Stardancer in the Stewards’ and also won the Derby Since then Derby winners have not appeared in the field for the Stewards Handicap. Three-year-olds that have won the Stewards’ Handicap Include Clanranald 8.5, Stepnlak 7,10, Royal Artillery 7.10, Machine Gun 8.9, Gold Crest 8.3, Bon Reve 8.6 and Stardancer 6.7, Warstep 6.13 J (afterwards unlucky to suffer defeat by Bonny Helen in the Oaks Stakes). 8.1, and Paper Slipper 8.5. The Riccarton Handicap would have provided a test of stamina for Beaulivre, and the Stewards' Handicap will provide a test of both. A Derby candidate in Baran is engaged in the Riccarton Handicap at 8.4, and BeauJivre would have to give him considerable poundage.
