Mrs O. G. Hardwick left on Thursday on a visit to Auckland.

Mrs John Hamer returned on Wednesday from a six months’ trip abroad.

Miss Moodie is paying a short visit to Kelso as the guest of Miss Herbert.

Mrs George Crow and Miss Marion Crow have returned from a visit to Gore.

Mr and Mrs Willis Scaife, who were guests at the City Hotel, returned yesterday to Pembroke.

Miss Enid Hogg left this week for Wellington, where she will act as a demonstrator in the model kitchen at the Centenary Exhibition.

The Mayoress of St. Kilda, Mrs J. J. Marlow, left on Thursday to spend a few weeks with her son, Mr R. T. Marlow, of Christchurch.

Mrs A. K. Ibbotson, of Mornington, was hostess at a delightful mah-jongg party yesterday afternoon, given in honour of Miss Molly Runnerstrum, whose marriage will take place next week.

Miss Ethel Formby, sister of George Formby, the comedian, has, it was announced on October 5, been secretly married at Devonshire Square Register Office to Pilot-officer John Albert Gibson, a New Zealander whom she met for the first time just a week ago. The “ love-at-first-sight ” introduction took place in a Blackpool club where Miss Formby is appearing in a cabaret. She has retired from the stage. The bridegroom arrived jn England early last year for a short service commission in the Royal Air Force.

An enjoyable party was given by Mr and Mrs J. T. Kirkwood, of Balclutha, in the Railway Social Hall, the occasion being the coming of age of their youngest daughter, Mabel. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with a hornpipe by Miss T, Reid, a solo by Miss M. Belcher, and a recitation and solo by Mr G. Tweedie, Music was supplied by Messrs Morrison and D. Tosh, and an extra was played by Mrs Tie, Mr F. Washington made an efficient M.C. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr and Mrs J Johnston, and the Monte Carlo by Miss A. Kirkness and Mr H Ryder. The toast of the guest of honour was proposed by Mr T. Bain, after which Messrs Washington. Tie. and Tweedie spoke. Mr Kirkwood replied on behalf of Miss Kirkwood, and thanked those present for their gifts. Among those present were Mr and Mrs Barnett, sen., Mr and Mrs Bowmar, Mr and Mrs Bain, Mr and Mrs Kirkness.
