LAWRENCE Bowling The Tuapeka Bowling Club held its opening day on Labour Day. when the season was declared open by the president, Mr A. L. Hart. Golf The Lawrence Club held Its closing day on Wednesday afternoon, when a Mixed Foursome was held for trophies donated by Mrs C. J. Morris. The best cards were returned by Miss Nichols and Mr J. McAra. The various trophies won during the season were presented to the following:—Men’s Championship, J. McAra; Ladles’ Championship, Mrs G. H. Martin; trophy for lowest aggregate three medal rounds —men, J. E. Templer; ladies, Mrs G. H. Martin: King’s Birthday Mixed Foursomes—J. McAra and J. Christophers; putting, men, A. Arthur; long driving, men, J. Christophers. Lawn Tennis On Labour Day the Lawrence Lawn Tennis Club held a Yankee tournament, which drew a large number of entries. The winners were Mrs Wlnmlll and Goodlet, with Miss D. Burgess and W. Winchester runners-up. Cricket The following have been selected to represent the Lawrence Cricket Club against Milton A, at Simpson Park, Lawrence, today: J. Cavanagh, W. J. Cavanagh, R. Cotton, B. Percy, R. Hancock, R. Jones, W. Lorrey, R. Batchelor, J. Templer, J. Cavanagh and R. Cavanagh. MILLER’S FLAT Lawn Tennis The Miller’s Flat Tennis Club held a Mixed Doubles tournament on Labour Day. There was a large gathering of visitors and local players, and some good games were witnessed. After an exciting final the winners were Miss Elvia Campbell and Mr J. F. Urquhart, Miss Stone and Mr I. K. L. Scott being run-ners-up. After the tournament, the president (Mr J. Campbell) presented the cups to the winners. ROXBURGH Heavy Holiday Traffic Roxburgh proved popular over Labour Day week-end as a holiday resort. The hotels and all available accommodation and the motorists’ camp were filled. The weather was beautifully fine and many visitors were to be seen on the bowling green, tennis courts and golf course. Bowling On Labour Day, 32 members of the Roxburgh Bowling Club participated in a mixed progressive pairs match, the winners being Mrs F. Allen and Mr S. Crossan. Golf Last Saturday the men played a flag competition which was won by H. Tough, who placed his flag well up the nineteenth fairway. At the present time the links are in remarkably good order. The new lay-out of the course is rapidly taking shape and the men working on the links are making an excellent job of the reconstruction work. Display of Tulips During the week many flower lovers have visited the Moa Seed Farm to view the fields of tulips which are making a glorious show of bloom. The blooms are cut for the cut-flower trade and last week on one day no less than 6500 blooms were cut. ALEXANDRA Road Improvements Good progress is now being made with Improvements to the Alexandra-Roxburgh road. Gangs are now working all the way from Alexandra to Gorge Creek and one can see the survey pegs of the new lies of the proposed road. Motorists will certainly feel they are travelling over a new route altogether so great an elimination of bends is being attempted. At Mutton Town Gully, between Clyde and Alexandra, a bulldozer has been engaged in making an Improvement in this section, and here too several bad bends have been entirely eliminated. Wintry Conditions On Wednesday and Thursday wintry conditions prevailed in. Alexandra. Cold rain fell intermittently and the adjacent ranges have a good coating of snow. Personal The Rev H. W. and Mrs West returned to Alexandra on Thursday. Mr J. S. Lees, of Wellington, is visiting Alexandra. Mrs O. B. Fawcett is at present visiting Lawrence.
