PORT CHALMERS CLUB’S ' OPENING DAY GIFT OF EIGHT-OAR BOAT Reference to the gift of a best-and-best eight-oar boat from Mr Isaac Stevenson was made at the Port Chalmers Rowing Club’s official opening on Saturday afternoon. Gratitude was expressed to Mr Stevenson for his generous gift, the value of which is £l3O. There was a large attendance 1 at the official function in the. boathouse, the president of the club (Mr J. 1 Y. Love) occupying the chair. Good wishes for a successful season were expressed by representatives of sister clubs and other sports bodies. Speakers during the afternoon appealed for extra effort from oarsmen and supporters. to maintain the .sport at its present high level during the war period. The following toast list was honoured: — ‘The King”;. ‘Port Chalmers Club," Mr E. V. Fairbairn—Mr H. Hill; ” New Zealand Association,” Mr G. Thorn—Messrs S. G. Styche and T. Mackie; “ Otago Association, Mr Love—Mr F. Brough: " Sister Clubs,” Mr T, Mackie—Messrs E. Leftwlch (Queen’s Drive). W. E. Buxton (Otago), F. W. Eggers (North End). IV. Glengarry (University), and J. Turnbull (Oamaru); “Otago Regatta Committee,” Mr. Love—Mr J. Solomon: ‘ The Chairman,” Mr Fairbairn. The Dewar Cup, for the best all-round members in the club, decided by vote by club members, was presented to G. Hoskins. John Cardno was presented with a medal, the gift of Mr C Hook, for the best coxswain in the club, and A. Alcock, who was recently married, was the recipient of a present from club members.
