UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ DISPENSARY ANNUAL MEETING OF BOARD The twenty-eighth annual meeting of the United Friendly Societies’ Dispensary Board was held on Saturday night, Bro. James Reynolds (president) occupying the chair. In moving the adoption of the balance sheet, Bro. Reynolds spoke of the very satisfactory manner in which the past year’s business had been carried on He paid a very high tribute to the manager (Mr C. Byrne) and his staff and their unremitting services to the dispensary. and added that their efforts had contributed materially to the financial success of the year’s operations. The dispensary was fortunate in having such a good staff. Bro. Reynolds thanked the members of the board for their co-opera-tion and assistance during his term of office, which had been an exceedingly pleasant one. Bro. A. Wilson proposed the health of Bro. Reynolds, and referred in eulogistic terms to the manner in which the president had conducted the meetings of the board during the year. The usual toast list was honoured, and members expressed pleasure at the presence of Bro. John Vernor, the original president of the board, and tributes were also paid to the work of the secretary (Bro. W. Turvey) and treasurer (Bro. M. F. E. Cooney) for their services to the board over such long periods of years. Mr Byrne suitably acknowledged the references to the staff, ‘and returned thanks to his assistants for their loyal support during the year. OPERA HOUSE Victor McLagien In “ Ex-Champ ” Which is more precious—your honour or that of your child? That is the question facing Victor McLagien in the role of an ex-champion fighter in his new Universal picture, “ Ex-champ,” which will be shown at the Opera House to-day at 2 p.m., tonight at 7.30, and on Tuesday at 7.45 p.m. In the supporting cast is Tom Brown as the young boxer. Nan Grey is McLaglen’s daughter, Donald Briggs is the worthless son and Constance Moore is seen as the Park avenue blue-blood in love with the son. William Frawley appears as the faithful camp follower. “ The Affairs of Annabel ” Flavoured with high-speed humour and side-splitting situations. “ The Affairs of Annabel,” which will be shown with “ ExChamp ” at the Opera House to-day and to-morrow, features Jack Oakle and Lucille Ball. The story revolves around the unexpected results of a series of imaginative exploits contrived by Oakie in his role of rash press agent to publicise Miss Ball, who plays the role of a fiery film star. Perfectly suited to the mirth-making talents of its two stars, “ The Affairs of Annabel provides a wealth of entertainment, and as well affords interesting behind the scenes action on producing pictures. “The Lone Ranger” will be shown at the matinee to-day and at 7.30 to-night. SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS ANNUAL MEETING The annual report and balance sheet, which showed the finances in a sound position, were adopted at the annual meeting of the Oamaru branch of the South African Veterans. The following officebearers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr D. R. Corson: vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. McKay and H. Callaghan; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. W. Woodward; auditor, Mr W Edwards: committee, financial members. The chief function of the past year was an enjoyable picnic held at Ashburton in conjunction with the Tlmaru and Christchurch veterans. Annual Reunion The South African Veterans’ annual reunion was held in Saturday night, Mr D. R. Corson (president) occupying the chair. A very happy time was spent in recalling Incidents of the Boer War and renewing friendships made on the veldt, and the following toast list was honoured: " The King ”; ” Fallen Comrades : Kindred Associations ” (Mr A. W. Woodward— Messrs W. Couper, North Otago Highland Pipe Band: and R. E. Dimick North Otago Amateur Athletic Association): ” Visitors “ (Mr H. M. Maude—Messrs W Hayman, Timaru: and S. Malthus, Waimate): “Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr A. Stock —Messrs D. S. Smith and J. Ericson); “The Press” (Mr W Shirkey): and "The Chairman.” The roll call was answered by members of every contingent from the first to the tenth, there being eight grandfathers and a father of twins among the veterans. , . .. Community singing ot old songs of the Boer War period were greatly enjoyed, and songs were contributed by Messrs Colin Campbell, J. Mayfield, J. Macmillan, A. W. Woodward, R. E. Dimick, and E. Porter. Mr George Dorward played the accompaniments. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Severe Head Injuries As a result of a fall on Friday night, Frank William Harkin, an employee of Mr Arthur Gardiner (Island Cliff), suffered severe head injuries, necessitating his removal by the St. John Ambulance to the Oamaru Public Hospital. He was admitted late on Friday night, and his condition is reported as serious. To-morrow’s Stock Sale Present entries for to-morrow’s Waiareka sale include fat sheep and cattle, two trucks of hoggets, and store cattle. Court Pride of Oamaru Chief Ranger Dixon presided at the fortnightly meeting of Court Pride of Oamaru, A.0.F., at which sick pay amounting to £ll 19s 2d and accounts totalling £76 were passed for payment. The question of holding an old members’ night was held over in the meantime.
