INTENSE TREMORS

- —— PARTS OF AMERICA SHAKEN DAMAGE NEGLIGIBLE QUEBEC, Oct. 19. An earthquake shook the city environs and stopped clocks at 6.54 a.m. Many people were frightened and ran into the streets, but nobody was injured, and the damage was negligible. Minor tremors were felt in Montreal and the north-western and mid-western sections of the United States. The Harvard seismologist reported tremors of major intensity. ' A message from New York states that tremors described as a “major” earthquake, centring in the western Atlantic, were felt along the entire north-eastern seaboard, and as far west as Ohio. Dishes rattled, pictures became crooked, automobiles swerved, and some houses rocked on their foundations, but the damage was not important.
