PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr T. Scollay) occupied the chair, and there were also present Crs J. T. Knewstubb, J. H. Williamson, J. Samson, W. Leftwich, J. S. Thorn, L. G. Jack. N. A. Macdonald, E. H. Cook, W. D. Sutherland, and W. D. Mead. Gas Department The gas manager in his report' for September stated that 20J tons of coal were carbonised during the month, yielding 280,100 cubic feet of gas, an average of 13,660 cubic feet per ton. It was found necessary to fit a new set of springs in the main exhauster, otherwise the manufacturing plant continued to function without giving trouble. Two purifiers were cleaned and refilled with fresh oxide during the month. The fence on the railway boundary had been completed and given a coat of paint. The fence had filled a long-felt want in the improvement of the appearance of the vicinity from the railway side, and the gasworks' yard was now fully enclosed. The report was adopted. Town Clock The caretaker of the town clock reported that a fault had developed in the striking mechanism of the town clock. The Standing Committee reported that it had decided that the advice of the firm which erected the clock should be obtained. When a reply was received action would be taken to rectify the present trouble. The committee's action was approved. Bathing Beach A reply was received from the Otago Harbour Board, giving the council power to exercise control over the beach area recently formed on the eastern side of the Port Chalmers Peninsula. A proviso was made that no structures should be erected on the area without the approval of the board. It was anticipated (the Standing Committee reported) that the beach would be used by a large number of bathers, and it was necessary that some form of local control should be evercised over the area. The letter was received. Level Crossing at Mussel Bay The district engineer, New Zealand Railways, advised that he proposed making an inspection of the level crossing at Mussel Bay at an early date. The letter-was received. Street Light in Mary Street The city electrical engineer advised that a street light would be erected in Mary street in the course of the present week. The letter was received. Emergency Precautions Scheme A communication was received from the Government in the matter of provision of an emergency precautions scheme at Port Chalmers. The Standing Committee reported that it had the matter in hand, and at the present time was in communication with the Dunedin City Council regarding the scheme, which it was proposed should cover the whole of the Dunedin metropolitan area. Cycling on Footpaths The Standing Committee reported that it noted that again the riding of bicycles on footpaths in the borough had become prevalent, and steps were being taken to abate the practice. The assistance of the police was being sought In order to bring offenders to book. The committee's action was approved. Tar-scalinc Consideration has been given, stated the report of the Standing Committee, to the question of providing a one-coat top-dress-iing on the following highways in the borough:—Highway No. 225: From the Cenotaph to the railway bridge. This work is to Include the widening of the sealing in George street to the full width of the street. The estimated cost of the whole work is £482. Highway No. 643: From the band rotunda to the Crescent Hotel, including repairs to the macadamised portion. Estimated cost £590. The committee recommended that tenders should be called for the sealing work. The recommendation was approved.
