ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT "Mossburn," Broad Bay.—According to records published by the Canterbury Jockey Club, the first Canterbury Cup was run in 1855 The race was run In heats over two miles. The Christchurch Cup was first run In 1852 and nin over hurdles. The Turf Register s record of the Canterbury Cup starts at 1£166. The thoroughbred horse was unknown in New Zealand in 1833. The jubilee meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held in 1904. N.Z. Cup Meeting Friday next is general nomination day for the New Zealand Cup meeting. Jewish Lad It is reported that Jewish Lad will not fulfil'his engagements at Trentham. The Otautau Meeting Nominations are due on Friday next, October 20, for the Otautau Racing Club s meeting. Gusplnl Guiipini was too much of a handful for the feather-weight who rode him at Tima:ru. A Llitht-welght Esperance Bay, who shaped promisingly over hurdles at the Grand National meeting, ils engaged at Trenthahi. Sailing Lady Sailing Lady galloped well on Saturday, and appears 1 to have benefited by her race at Wingatui. She should shape well at the Gore meeting. Defaulter At Timaru, on Saturday, F. A. Roberts stated that there was nothing seriously wrong with Defaulter, and a spell would find him ready for another preparation Premature "■tykh three days' racing taking place at Trentham after the publication of the weights for the Stewards' Handicap, their appearance seems to be rather premature. Golden Sheila , Golden Sheila, the winner of the principal levent on the second day at Auckland, was got by Gay Shield from Madam Ruth, by Lackham—Lady Marie, by Rormso, a son of Flying Fox. Fast Miles Beaulivre won the Great Northern Guineas in lmin 38sec. Others in Golden Wings lmin 37 3-ssec, Gold Trail lmin 37 4»ssec, Gay Blonde lmin 37 3-ssec, and jSmoke Screen lmin 37 2-ssec scored the best wins from a| time point' of view. " " Beaulivre Beaulivre continues to prove a cheap horse at 2900 guineas, He has won four times this season, and it seems only a question of ordinary luck for the colt to continue in a winning groove. Birthday Boy Birthday Boy, who finished a close second in the Mitchelson Cup, is a five-year-old-gelding by Limond from Queen March, by Lucullus. and is a half-brother to Queen City, the winner of the Welcome Stakes. Royal Chief A Sydney scribe, in commenting on the Metropolitan, said Royal Chief was closer at the finish than at any other stage'of the race, but found his big weight too much, and it is doubtful if he is as good now as he was 12 months ago A Horse. By Any Name It has often been said that a badlynamed horse could not win the English Derby, but it does not apply to handicap racing in 'New Zealand. It was not a bar to Royevrus winning the Mitchelson Cup. ,r Royevrus is a four-year-old gelding by Surveyor—Desert Fire, by Diacque-nod-~Cross. by Campflre. a son of Carbine. ~ .., •.. . ■'•..•■••'•.. Torb Koura Toro Koura won in good style and was going-on at the right end. He races in Bandages in front, but seems quite sound, and they are no doubt used as a protection. Toro Koura is developing into a fine type of horse. He is a four-year-old colt by Pink Coat from Gold Pit, by Cockpit—Gold Bound, by Gold Reef from Edith Cureton, a half-sister by Castor to Trenton. Niagara, Cissy and company Wardress Wardress, the winner ot the Teschemaker Handicap, is a fine type of mare showing good size and quality. She was got by Lord Warden from Clink by Clarenceux—Wink, by Winkie—Judith, by Martian—Hebrew Maid. Lord Warden was got by Hurry On—Hythe. by ChaucerMiss Gunning 11. by Carbine—Memoir, by St. Simon Queen City Queen City, the winner of the Auckland Welcome Stakes, is a bay filly by Iliad from Queen March, by Lucullus—March, by Marble Arch Lucullus mares have ?irod!uced Lucretia (dam of Mala, sold at OOOgns), Lucella (dam of Supremacy and granddam of Stretto and High Caste) §etl<! Star (dam of .Majority), Queen March (dam of Queen City.Limarch). Doree (dam of Princess Doreen and eranddam of Doria), Nucleus , (dam of Gay Circle). Royal March (dam of Royal Appellant) and others that have produced winner? Val Pere ' The support accorded Val Pere at Masterton suggests that track work supplied the inspiration, and he may be worthy of note' for Trentham. He is a three-year-old colt by Beau Pere from Valeni, by VaUiis—Ladv Capertee, by Tressadv—Lady Rylestone, by Grafton—Lady Trenton Lord Cardigan and Dividend, two highclass horses, belong to the same family Kabul One of the nardest races to win at Trentham next Thursday will be the Rimutaka Handicap, foi the hack sori:nters, but there is tittle doubt (says ' Ramgitiri") who will be the favourite Kahui has shown such brilliance in his races to date that he is already regarded as equal to open sprint class, and a lot of money will be lost if he should fail to irun up to expectations Riders at Trentham The following riding engagements have been made for Wellington—B. H. MorrisMalik Kafur, Disdain Taitama Play On. Colonel Bogey, Wings of Sone: H W. vVigifins—Th» Bigot. Tooley Street. Sceptre Black Robe: P. Atkins—Enrich. Absolve. Dainty Sue. Lady Tinkle- W J Mudford—Entail, Submission Gold Ballad. Aurora's Star.

Notable Increase The very substantial increase in the investments recorded on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's meeting is all the more notable because Beaulivre was the only favourite to win during the day No fewer than four rank outsiders succeeded in winning, and this would mean a lot of money going out of circulation, but apparently the Auckland racegoers go well-armed with the sinews of war when tilting against the totalisator In addition to an almost complete defeat of the, favourites, which generally has a restricting effect on betting, there was also a division race on the card. Regular and consistent punters do not tike division races as betting propositions, and hence cut their bets, but those in search of big dividends may have reason to appreciate them. What a racing club thinks of divisions is shown by the invitation fc scratch Wagner for the Heathcote Handicap, which he won, paying around three score and ten. An Unruly Mare Brunhild, who had not won a race since the Oaks of 1937, staged a remarkable return to the winning list in the Grandstand Handicap on the first day of the Masterton meeting. She was very fractious both before the race and at the barrier, breaking the birdcage fence and having to be led to the post, while at the start she refused to line up and gave the field at least four lengths start. In spite of this she ran up quickly past the early leader, Race Call, and in the straight she never looked like being caught. The Wairlo Jockey Club The annual report to be delivered by Mr T. Todd, president of the Wairio Jockey Club, says: "Since our members last met together the British Empire, in the defence of minor nations in Europe, has become involved in the second big war during the past quarter of a century, and the question of carrying racing on in the Dominion has been debated from both sides. I am only voicing my private opinion in stating that this club should carry on as usual. As trustees of semipublic funds racing club committees have a clear-cut duty to perform in times like the present. By holding its annual race meeting at the usual time the committee will not only provide a healthy day of recreation for the residents of the district, but will also provide employment in the district, assist owners and trainers to keep their establishments going, and help the Government to collect taxation that would otherwise be missed if the meeting were not held. Last season we paid over £7OO in taxation on the day's racing, and as the rate has since been considerably increased it is safe to assume that the amount will be larger this season. 1 am strongly of the opinion that our annual race meeting should be held, and that the whole of the net profits of the fixture should be given to war or patriotic funds That is my proposal, and it is now placed before you for your approval or otherwise." TROTTING NOTES •", By Sentinel FIXTURES October 21, 23.—Greymouth T.C. October 21, 23.—Auckland T.G. October 23.—Oamaru T.C. October 28.—Wellington T.C October 28.—Invercargill T.C. November 7,9, 10.—N.Z. Metropolitan T.C November 23 25—Forbury Park T.C December 2.—Wairlo T.C.' December 2.—New Brighton T.C At Addington Nominations are due to-day for the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting. Virtually a Cup Field In the Hannon Memorial Handicap at the Oamaru meeting, the complete New Zealand Cup field has accepted except Lawn Derby, which will not arrive from Australia in time for the Oamaru meeting. Wjyndham Juvenile Stakes The penalty conditions attached to the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes provide that a winner of one classic for two-year-olds or three-year-olds or the winner of one maiden race will be penalised 12 yards. The winner of two or more classics or maiden races will be penalised 24 yards. Unregistered Mares At the last meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association Mr S. W. Kelly drew attention to the number of classic horses which were out of unregistered mares. It is one great blot on lightharness racing that unregistered mares figure too frequently in the returns. Nominations from such mares should be refused for classic events. Brother to Gaillard It is reported that the two-year-old brother to Gaillard continues to make good progress in his education, and at the moment he is the most promising youngster being handled at Addington. He is a natural pacer with plenty of speed, and he is the type to gain favourable attention in any company. Bonny Logan, the dam of this colt, Gaillard, Bayard, and Coquette, has a colt foal at foot by Rey de Oro, and it is understood that he has recently been purchased by a prominent sportsman at a stiff figure. Owners and Breeders "Although it is not the intention of the association during the present difficult period to harass the Government with proposed reforms to the Gaming Act, activity in this and other directions must be kept alive and in a state of preparedness for presentation at the right moment," said Dr E. H. B, Milsom. in his presidential address to members of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Racing Owners, Breeders, and Trainers' Association, at the annual meeting held last Week After referring to the unfortunate position of world affairs and hostilities in Europe, Dr Milsom said the need for co-operation of owners, breeders, and trainers was greater than ever to protect their own as well as racing interests generally There was a danger of some clubs reducing stakes before any such need might arise, and he expressed the opinion that clubs which adopted a policy of maintaining the present high standard of the sport would weather the storm should it be prolonged The following resolution on the mattei was passed:- ' That while this meeting of owners breeders, and trainers fully appreciates that racing should bear its share under present conditions, it feels that the withdrawal of the rebate of 1 per cent, and the additional 2J per cent, up to £20,000 totalisator turnover allocated to clubs of late years combined with the benzine restrictions, will affect clubs, and particularly country clubs, and trusts that the Government will give consideration to relief in necessitous rases when the position warrant?! it." RICCARTON NOTES TRENTHAM CANDIDATES (Special ro Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH Oct 16 All the Riccarton horses to race at Trentham were on the track this morning Those that were racing at Washdyke on Saturday were let off with easy tasks, but some of the others were allowed to stride along in smart sprinting tasks on Hip plough, which was fast. Winning Rival had Great Flight a<- a mate for six furlongs, which they ran in lmin 15 4-ssec, while Wild Fox dashed over three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Grev Night and Blue Coat were on terms' all through a six-furlong spin in lmin 16 3-ssec. Parquet with Glenogil to bring ner home was going very well over the last part of six furlongs, which she covered In lmin 17sec Gay Parade had no trouble to do half a mile up the back in Slsec C C McCarthy will leave for the north to-night with Haughty Winner. Rabble and Cymric Most of the other trainers who are to make the trip will delav their departure till to-morrow night. The Wingatui trainer A E. Didham. who has Boloyna engaged on the second and third days, will make the trip on Wednesday night. Counterblast has been slightly lame for a day or two, and will not make the trip to Trentham. Jewish Lad. the hurdle winner at Washdyke, may be allowed to miss his Trentham engagements.

While the special - passenger train had a good run to Christchurch after the South Canterbury races on Saturday, those who travelled by the horse train were late in arriving. Timed to leave Washdyke at 6 o'clock, it was late in making a start, and did not reach Sockburn till 10.45 p.m., with the result that it was approaching midnight when some of the trainers reached their homes after attending to their horses. * AUCKLAND MEETING THE SPRING HANDICAP GOLDEN SHEILA SUCCESSFUL BRONWEN WINS THE SPRINT (Peb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 16. Won by half a length, with a neck between second and third. Ivy Willonyx was fourth. Time, lmin 37 2-ssec THE EPSOM HANDICAP AN UNEVEN START (Special to Dailv Times) AUCKLAND, Oct. 16. The Epsom Handicap was robbed of considerable interest owing to a very uneven start, in which about half the horses lost their chances at barrier rise. Victory went to the moderately-fancied Bronwen, who finished strongly on the rails after being fifth into the straight behind Orwere. Arvakur. Bachelor King, and Palustre Orwere, although he came away from the rails, battled on solidly for third after setting a fast pace with Arvakur, who weakened into fourth. The eachway favourite. Our Jean, was unlucky, and came home fast on the outside for second after being a long way back with two furlongs covered. Orate was left standing at the post, and took no part in the race. Mon Acre. Farland. and Aero King were also badly left None of the others gave any trouble. Favoured with a beautiful run on the rails behind Francis Drake and Valmint, the eighth fancy Golden Sheila, slipped through on the inside when they swung wide at the turn and won the Spring Handicap very decisively. Golden Sheila has come on quickly with her recent racing, and registered a good performance. Most of the horses on the outside of the field at the barrier lost a lot of ground at the start, and the second fancy. Balinavar, took no part in the race. Royevrus and Sly Fox were among those to suffer and in the circumstances they did remarkably well to fill the minor places, both finishing gallantly. The each-way favourite. Birthday Boy was also checked at the start, and he'was closer in fourth position at the finish than at any other stage. Francis Drake and Valmint both had every chance out in front, but they faded in the last furlong. Hot Box went a good race, but Gold Vaals, Scotland, Airam, Royal Appellant and Tnver all lost their chances i On the strength ot his good third in the Shorts »*andicap on the first day, Val Lu was made an each-way favourite for the Liverpool Handicap, and he scored nicely. Val Lu was patiently ridden on the rails by O. Evans, and after following Namara. Black Musk. Vaalso. and Notium into the straight he came home attractively on the rails to win going awav Namara made a great effort to lead from end to end. and was a pood second, running his best race since coming to Auckland Vaalso was always prominent and after drawing up to Namara on the outside at the distance weakened slightly near the post for a close third. Ivy Willonyx ran on fairly well for fourth. Black Musk weakened in the last furlong The second fancy. Valamito, was last early, and never appeared likely Notium showed up at the turn, but failed to run on
