•• Centennial Miscellany ” The industrious and enterprising editor of the New Zealand Triad (Mr N. F. Hoggard) has made a purely literary contribution to the Dominion’s anniversary with the publication of “ Centennial Miscellany” (Handcraft Press 3s 6d). This little publication contains eight short stories and sketches of New Zealand life by writers whose names are, for the most part, familiar to those with more than a nodding acquaintance with New Zealand literature in its contemporary manifestations, and nine poems, most of which celebrate some aspect of the native scene. Though more ambitious pro-
jects are promised, there should be a place for this booklet as testifying to the talent to be discovered among New Zealand writers. A.R.P.* In “A.R.P. for Australians ” (Robertson and Mullens, Is), Alan Brooksbank, who has campaigned consistently for civilian preparedness, shows that the menace to health and life of air raids can be greatly reduced by the taking of inexpensive precautions. The booklet is exhaustive and up to date, and for the most part addressed to the householder, though there is a special chapter for fire brigades on dealing with fire bombs and similar weapons.
Domestic “ Grow Your Own Food Supply ’’ and “ Make Your Owr Jams ” (English Universities’ Press, each Is) are books with: an immediate and practical interest to the New Zealand public. W, E Shewell-Cooper. the author of “ Grow Your Own Food Supply,” is a wellknown writer on vegetable growing and the other work is based on “ M.ay Byron’s Jam Book.”
