ARRANGING FLOWERS WITH A DIFFERENCE
Hand-in-hand with October sunshine come the dancing daffodils, gayest of all spring flowers. Indoors they look their best in something simple and sturdy, such as an old earthenwire jam pot. With them, to help them stand erect, put some twiggy brancheshawthorn will do, but best of all is golden-starred forsythia. Most difficult of all to arrange gracefully are the short - stemmed flowers that bloom in the springsnowdrops, crocuses, primroses. Find a little wicker basket—the kind that often comes holding a large chocolate egg—and place inside it a small pot of water. Mass the flowers in this until the whole basket is completely full, and you'll find you have the most enchanting centrepiece for your table. Here is a pretty idea. Round your table candle or fruit bowl place a posyring, and fill it with mixed flowers. And remember branches of late catkins lend themselves to decoration very well, especially if arranged in one of those tall modern pottery jugs Scratches on varnish will disappear if a coarse cloth that has been well saturated with linseed oil is laid over them If, when stewing fruit, you find you have added too much water, thus making the syrup too thin, try thickening it with a little cornflour. Use a levei teaspoonful of cornflour to about half a pint of juice. This will thicken it sufficiently without making it apparent. You must first drain off the juice, and -se a spoonful of it to smooth the cornflour. Add the remainder of the cornflour, boil for a minute or two, keeping it stirred It may then be mixed with the fruit again This hint is most useful when stewing prunes or other dried fruit, as a good proportion of water has to be used and a comparatively small amount of sugar. NADCO HAS MORE COLOUR STRENGTH. A cake ot NADCC is made in concentrated form, and so makes it more economical to use than other dyes.
