WATERSIDE WORKER CONVICTED SEVEN DAYS IN GAOL (Per United Press Association; WELLINGTON. Oct. 4. "This is the sort of thing that has been going on for years now, and it is very difficult to stop." said the magistrate (Mr W. F. Stilwell), when conictlng David Kinnear. a waterside worker of the theft of a tin of condensed .nilk. valued at 9d. He imposed a sentence of seven days' im•"■''eonment. The magistrate said that in spite of the man's excellent record there could be no doubt that he lied about the matter. His Worship could not accept the proposition as to his good intentions..
The accused had said that the tin fell out on the wharf from a damaged case. He could not get it back, and took it to his coat, with the intention of returning it to the shed. The ship's mate said he saw the accused take the tin from a broken case and out it beneath his waistcoat and then make for the coat, which was hanging nearby. He then out the tin in the pocket and covered it with a handkerchief.
Counsel for the accused agreed that the court was not concerned with the question of a ninepenny tin of milk, but with the question as to whether cargo had been pilfered.
