MONTHLY MEETING ' The monthly meeting of the council of the Otago university was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by the chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) and Messrs James Wallace, S. Rice, J. Robertson, F. W. Mitchell, Wj R. Brugh, A. Steel, L. D, Ritchie, Sir James Allen. Dr R. J. T. Bell, Dr Carmalt Jones, Dr James Fitzgerald, Dr Stanley Batchelor and Miss M- W. May. Changed Conditions The registrar of Canterbury College submitted a memo from Professor White recommending that the {our colleges should make a combined effort to provide £SOO per annum for the appointment 1 of a refugee of high academic standing to lecture in the four centres. The chancellor said that the outbreak of war had altered the position, and that it would be exceedingly difficult to give effect to the suggestion. Dr Bell said that the professorial Board had considered the suggestion, and had decided that it was im'Dr Belr moved in this direction, and the motion was carried. Students in Chemistry Mr M. V. Resident Medical Officer The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board wrote stating that Dr Murray McGeorge had been reappointed for « further term of 12 months as RM.O. The letter was received. Grant for Adult Education The registrar of the University of New Zealand wrote advising that the amount allocated for adult education in Otago for 1940 was £I9OO, plus £3OO for women’s work. He asked that a scheme of work be prepared and submitted. The registrar also stated that any deficit on the W.E.A. account this year should be the first charge on the grant for 1940. , The chancellor remarked. that the offer was less favourable than what had been hoped for. ' It was decided to refer the matter to the Advisory Committee of “Adult Education to report. '1: ; : I Report by Professorial Board The registrar submitted particulars of business transacted by the Professorial board. The board pointed out that it Was not possible to include Spanish in the optional subjects for entrance to the Home Science Diploma course as Spanish was not a subject for the University. Entrance or the school certificate examination. There was, however, no objection to including Maori. The board recommended that Professor John Dickie be invited to deliver the graduation address. Professor Dickie had Indicated his willingness to do so. The report was approved. Lecturers’ Association Mr H. H. Ferguson, hon, secretary of the Lecturers’ Association, notified that Dr Billing had been reappointed its representative on the Professorial Board, and that Miss E. O. Campbell, the Rev. W. A. Curzon-Siggers and himself had been elected representatives on the Board of Control. The association was of opinion that no lecturers’ representative should be convener of the Lodgings Committee. It was decided to ask the board to submit a scheme for the working. Of the Lodgings Committee. Fund Exhausted Mr Norton Francis, hon. secretary of the Carnegie Corporation Advisory Committee, wrote stating that the activities of his committee would terminate at the end of this year, when the funds would be exhausted. He presumed that if the members of the A.CE. staff could not be continued they would be advised of the position. The chairman explained that tee vote from the Carnegie Corporation was for five years and that this period had now expired. When the grant had been made it had been thought that the community would be so convinced of the value of tee. experiment thal it would take steps to continue it. . The question of what was to happen, to the staff of the Association of Country Education was discussed, and It was finally decided to refer the matter to the Finance and Home Science Committees with power to act Committee Reports Adopted 1 The reports of the Finance, Works. Medical and Home Science Committees and the report of tv- Committee of Management of the Museum were adopted without discussion. The Museum Committee reported, that the Director of Education had notified that Sir Percy Sargood had been reappointed a member of the committee. ______
