BALCLUTHA Sudden Death at Walwera A man named Hughes, about 60 years of age, died suddenly on Monday night wid e on a visit to the farm of Mr Angus Shaw, Waiwera South. Mr Hughes had arrived at the farm a week ago, and seemed all right until he retired to bed. He occupied a room with the cowboy bn the place. He had a cup of tea with the others before retiring, and after he was in bed he, was asked if he would have another cup, but he refused, saying that he had had too much tea, and he doubted if he would sleep much that night. When the boy I went to bed at 9 p.m. he found that Mr Hughes was dead. Constable Boyle , conveyed the body to yesterday, and an inquest will be held. Dr Frenglev examined the body, and gave it as his opinion that heart disease was the cause of death. The deceased was a single man. and a brother resides at Lawrence. Owing to the temporary absence of the district coroner, the inquest will not be held until later. Special Force Volunteers The medical examination of 18 local volunteers for the special expeditionary force of 6600 men was conducted at the Band liall yesterday by Drs Radcliffe, Frengley. and Gumming, and Mr F. J. Anderson (dentist). The percentage of passes was good. A Good Record The three .sons of Mrs H. Hanley .of Balclutha. successfully passed the medical examination yesterday for the special volunteer force. Clutha Presbytery At a meeting of the Clutha Presbytery at Balclutha a welcome was extended- to the Rev. O. T. Baragwanath on taking his seat for the first time. A call to the- Rev. T. M. McDonald, of Walwera-Warepa, was received from the congregation at Green Island, and, on being placed in Mr McDonald’s hands, was accepted. The call was sustained, and the induction at Green Island was fixed for October 5. Messrs Ayson, Neale, and Sutherland spoke highly of the work done by Mr McDonald, and regret was" expressed at his departure. The Rev. William McNeur (Clutha Valley) was appointed interim moderator at Walwera-Warepa, and the Rev; R. S. Judson (Clinton) Interim moderator: at Owaka and Catlins. >• • . ,
