WAIKOUAITI COUNTY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held yesterday. The chairman (Cr W. Lee) presided, and Crs HT. Laley, C. T. McCallum, D. McLachlan, C, C. Robertson. and D. Young were also present. Correspondence Mr P. M. HefTernan wrote asking the council to clear snowdrifts from the portion of the road from the Waihemo County boundary, along the Nenthorn road, to the top of Zig-Zag Hill.—The letter was received and it was decided to refer the matter to the inspector with power to act. Mr A. H. Kettle wrote slating that Mitchell’s ford required attention and requesting the council to repair it.— The matter was referred to the inspector. A letter was received from Mr J. D. Fletcher asking for permission to cut an entrance for motor vehicles to his property in Karitane.—The permission was granted, subject to the work being done to the inspector’s satisfaction. Mr G. Andrew wrote asking for permission to remove 20 yards of soil from the roadside at Karitane.—Consent was given, provided that the soil would be taken from a place approved by the inspector. The residents of Duke street, Sawyers’ Bay, wrote asking the council to clear gorse from the roadway.—The property owners will be served with notice to clear the gorse. A letter, requesting permission to make an entrance to the church, was received ffom the Catholic Church Committee of SeaclifT. —The permission was granted. A written suggestion that the council should join with the Waikouaiti Borough Council in forming a Physical

Welfare and Recreation Committee was, forwarded from the Department of Internal Affairs.—The letter was received. r ' '

A tracing of part of the Dunedin to Port Chalmers main road was received from the Land and Deeds Registry Office. It was requested that the road should be recognised by the council as a public highway under Its control.—The matter was left in the hands of the member for the riding concerned to report to the council at its next meeting. The secretary of the Waikouaiti Centennial Committee wrote advising that . the work of constructing memorials was being carried out. Speedy remittance of the council’s contribution of £IOO would'be appreciated.—The letter was received Waitati River Flooding The council received a deputation representing the settlers in the Waitati district who were affected by the flooding of the Waitati River. The deputation asked the council to subscribe towards the cost of a scheme to eradicate the nuisance created by the river’s periodical flooding. It had been estimated that the approximate expenditure on the scheme would be £2OOO. Advice had been received from the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) that the Public Works Department would meet the balance of the cost if the council subscribed £250. Public Works men would be in charge of the work. The. council agreed to pay to the Public Works Department £250, provided that the ratepayers concerned m the Waitati flooding area were prepared to pay a special rate of id in the £ on the capital value of all properties in that area until the amount was fully paid. General The health Inspector’s report that there had been one case of typhoid fever at the Seacliff Mental Hospital was received. It was decided that the health officer’s attention should be drawn to the state of the drains connected with the rest home at Warrington. ' Representatives of several firms which sell road graders were met by the council The matter of purchasing a grader was held over, however, until the council had agreed upon the type most suited to the county’s , requirements. Finance Accounts amounting to £366 12s 5d were passed for payment. , : , Inspector’s Report The inspector’s report for the month was as follows: —

Hawkesbury Riding.—An old culvert which gave way last month on Mill ' road has been replaced with 24-inch ■> concrete pipes and another old culvert; at Puddy’s Corner has been replaced [ with concrete pipes.
