DAVIS CUP TIE
THE PACIFIC ZONE FINAL AUSTRALIA v. JUGOSLAVIA BROMWICH BEATEN BY PUNCEC (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, Aug. 24. In the Davis Cup tie between Australia and Jugoslavia the Singles resulted as follows: — Quist defeated Mitic 6—o, 6—4. 6—3. Puncec defeated Bromwich 6—2, B—6, o—6, 6—2. The first set between Quist and Mitic was unimpressive. Mitic’s errors seemed to stamp him as a novice, and even in the second set he gave no real demonstration of tournament calibre until the seventh game in the second set, when Quist lapsed into errors, thus prolonging the match until the tenth ‘game. Mitic broke Quist’s service at one stage in the third set, but the Australian retaliated by accounting for his opponent’s service in the ninth game. Bromwich held a brief advantage in the first set against Puncec, but the Jugoslav soon mastered his play and gave an exhibition of brilliant net and back-court play. In the second set Bromwich fought back gamely, but Puncec’s versatility and greater accuracy gave him victory. He yielded in the third set after leg massage, but took the fourth in quick time. Hopman stated that Puncec’s vie-' tory was a surprise, but illustrated clearly that Bromwich had not had sufficient forcing practice in firstclass singles. “ I am trying to arrange much stiffer competition after this and hope to have the services of Perry for that purpose.”
