OBITUARY

MR ROBERT McINDOE Mr Robert Mclndoe, who died recently at Gore, was born in Dumbartonshire in 1859. He came to New Zealand in the Aboukir in 1864, with his parents, who took up their residence at Otokia and later on removed to Berwick. He was educated at the schools in these districts, and then became engaged in contracting work on the Taieri. As a young man he went to the North Island, and did carting for sawmills in various districts around Rangitikei. In 1897 he returned to the South Island and secured a farm at Wairuna. There he lived for many years, before retiring two years ago to live at Gore. Mr Mclndoe occupied the position of chairman of the Wairuna School Committee for a number of years and for a time was also its secretary. He was a member of the Clutha County Council for about 11 years, occupying the position of chairman in 1925-26. He was one of the earliest members of the Clinton Masonic Lodge, and was keenly interested in all its work. In 1891 Mr Mclndoe married Miss Ama Gatchell, of Caversham, and he is survived bv five daughters—Mrs O. E. Sim, of Ferndale, Mataura; Mrs W. C. Murray, of Clydevale; Mrs H. W. Cross, of Greenfield; Mrs W. J. Barr, of Ashburton, and Miss Mclndoe, of Gore —and one son. Mr C. G. Mclndoe, of Wairuna.
