Mr A. P. Norwood left on Wednesday for the military training school at Trentham.

Mr J. H. Gilbert, general traffic manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., is at present on a visit to Dunedin.

Major Sevan Dodds left by the through express yesterday to attend the military camp at Burnham.

Professor F. G. Soper left by the through express yesterday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the council of the Institute of Chemists. According to a notice in the Gazette, Dr M. A: F. Barnett has been appointed a member of the Carter Observatory Board for two years. Mr B. Ellis, of Dunedin, Dominion president of the South African War Veterans’ Association, is visiting Christchurch to attend the annual Dominion conference.

Mr J. Duncan, w.ho was well-known as a motorman on.the city trams for many years, who intends to take up his residence in Wellington, left for the north by the through express yesterday.

Mr Justice O’Regan, who has been on leave after an illness of some months ago, is expected to resume his duties as Judge of the Arbitration Court when the court finishes its South Island sittings in about a fortnights time.

A Press Association message from Parliament 1 Buildings states that the Controller and Auditor-general (Mr J. F. Fowler) will retire at the end of the month, having completed 44 years’ service. Mr Fowler spent the whole of his official career in the department. He succeeded the late Colonel Campbell in March, 1937.

The chairman of the Otago Hospital Board (Mr J. W. Dove) at its meeting last night, referred to the fact that a member of the board (Mr W. H. McLeod) and their medical superintendent (Dr Thomson) were suffering from broken legs, but he was glad to state that they were now recovering. An ex-member of the board (Mr J. W. Scurr) had also his leg broken, and he was glad to state that he also was getting on very well. After practising as a children’s medical specialist in Dresden for the past 10 years. Dr C. S. Meyer was compelled to give up his work on account of his Jewish ancestrv. and he arrived at Auckland bv the Rangitane yesterday to establish himself in New Zealand. Dr Meyer studied in the universities of Berlin. Munich. Heidelberg, and Goettingen. Before he will be oermitted to practise in New Zea land he must stuav at the Otago Medical School for three years and take a New Zealand medical degree, after which he expects to practise in Auckland.

At the meeting of the Otago Hospital Board last night the following motion was presented by the chairman (Mr J. W. Dove) and adopted;— “That the Otago Hospital Board extends its svmpathy to the Rt. Hon. Mr M. J. Savage. Prime Minister, upon his recent illness, expresses its pleasure on reading the latest newspaper reports that he is on the road to recovery, and trusts that he will soon be restored to the best < of health and resume his official duties.” Captain H. A. Dillner. D.C.M.. superintendent of the Marine Department at Dunedin, who has been promoted to a similar position at Auckland, was met yesterday by his friends connected with shipping in Dunedin and was the recipient of a presented by Mr R. D. Halstead on behalf of those present. Mr Halstead mentioned the high esteem in which Captain Dillner was held, and congratulated him on his promotion at the same time expressing regret at his departure from Dunedin. Captain Dinner replied briefly, and stated that the barometer would serve as a reminder of the many good friends he had made while in Dunedin.

North-bound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning were Messrs E. M. Hunt and H. D. Kerr for Christchurch, Mr J. H. Mason and Mrs M. Paape for Wellington, and Mr D. Trevathan for Auckland. South-bound passengers by the afternoon plane were Mr J. S. Land, Miss M. Land, and Mr B. N. Land and Messrs T. Cleary and K. Robertson from Wellington Mrs A. Vanston, Master B. Vanston from Gisborne. Mr R. Downer from Blenheim, and Mesdames N. Dunlop and A. C. Andrew from Christchurch. Mr Roy G. Nelson, production director of Dominion Productions, Ltd., has arrived in Dunedin to conduct auditions and commence the training of pupils who have signed contracts with that enterprise. Mr Nelson, who is credited with being the "discoverer” of Miss June Barson, the winner of the New Zealand Deanna Durbin contest, is well known in Australia and New Zealand as a producer, and is a son of the famous 'comedian. It is notified in the Gazette that Messrs F. W. Furkert, F. E. Greenish, E V. Blake, T. Jordan. W. Marshall, S. Blackley, and J. W. A. Heenan have been accepted members of the Town Planning Board for a period of three years. In addition, the board consists of the Minister of Internal Affairs, who is chairman, the director of town planning, the surveyorgeneral, the engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, and the Government architect.
