NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT OTAGO TWICE DEFEATED (Per United Press Association; INVERCARGILL, Aug. 24. The New Zealand basketball tournament was continued in Invercargill to-day in perfect weather. The highlight of the day was Southland’s meritorious win over Wellington by one goal. The results were as follows: FIRST GRADE Canterbury 16, HaWke’s Bay 15. Southland 14. Wellington 13. OTAGO UNLUCKY CANTERBURY’S NARROW WIN (Special to Daxlt Times) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 24. Otago’s first tournament game was a brilliant exhibition of basketball, and the local team, which was defeated by 14 goals to 13, was considered by the spectators to be very unlucky. Otago held the lead until the last five minutes, when Canterbury equalised at 12 all. Just before the last whistle D. Adams was penalised for attempting to shoot with one foot outside the circle. Canterbury’s succeeding movement resulting in a goal, which gave it the victory. • Canterbury won the toss and took the throw off. but was penalised on the line. D. Adams obtained the ball in a good shooting position, but was penalised for progression. Q. Phelan hindered Canterbury’s movement, but Canterbury gained possession again, although no score resulted. Otago players combined in an excellent effort, but lost the ball on the side line, C. Swann (Canterbury opening the score from the throw in. The Otago centres played spectacularly and carried the ball to the forward third, where M. Morrison scored an excellent goal. Score: I all. Otago attacked strongly and M. Morrison found the ring a few minutes later. Otago 2, Canterbury 1. Q. Phelan tipped the ball very cleverly in the centre, but Canterbury again captured and C. Swann secured its second goal. G. McAuslin was responsible for the next brilliant individual effort, but a goal did not eventuate until J. Clayton captured spectacularly under the goal and converted the score to Otago 3, Canterbury 2. Good combined play gave D. Adams another opportunity to score. Otago 4, Canterbury 2. Attacking movements on the part of both teams were fruitless owing to the inaccuracy of the forwards. J. Clayton and D. Adams, however, eventually found the ring. Otago 6. Canterbury 2. J. McLean. E. Sinclair and M. Whittington all saved brilliantly during this period, the three centres, Q. Phelan, S. McAuslin and L. Scott, carrying through the succeeding movements faultlessly Canterbury at length carried play to the goal-mouth where C. Swann scored. Otago 6, Canterbury 3. J. Millard intercepted beautifully in Otago’s circle, the succeeding movement resulting in C. Swann again netting. Otago 6, Canterbury 4. Clever play followed on the part of both teams, and Otago succeeded in scoring its seventh goal, M. Morrison being responsible. Otago 7, Canterbury 4, Otago missed its next opportunity, and, despite excellent spoiling tactics on the part of its players, Canterbury succeeded in its next attempt at goal. Half time was called with the score reading: Otago 7, Canterbury 5, Otago took the throw-off in the second half, but two infringements lost the team its advantage. The centres fed well, however, and after two attempts, D. Adams scored, Otago 8. Canterbury 5. E. Sinclair (Otago) and N Dick (Canterbury) both broke up attacking movements, but the Otago centres could not be stayed, and fed their forwards very well. The forwards, however, were not able to take advantage of their opportunities, and bright work on the part jf M Scott (Canterbury) gave C. Swann her next chance at goal, Otago 8. Canterbury 6. Both sides scored alternately. Otago 9, Canterbury 7, Otago combined in a spectacular movement which resulted in D. Adams scoring. Otago 10, Canterbury 7. Particularly clever play on the part of the Otago players and M. Scott (Canterbury) characterised the next period, but

Otago failed to score. Canterbury obtained possession from a throw in, R, Cursons netting. Otago 10, Canterbury 8. D. Adams’s next uhot rolled .out of the ring, but C, Swann added one more for Canterbury. Otago 10, Canterbury 9. J. McLean saved brilliantly for Otago and J. Millard for Canterbury, the ball travelling up and down the field. Clever play on the part of J. Clayton, M. Morrison, and D, Adams resulted in two more goals being added. Otago 12, Canterbury 9. Canterbury successfully used opportunities obtained through Infringements by Otago, and excellent shooting equalised the scores at 12 all. Otago’s succeeding shots failed, and Canterbury captured from an Otago throw in from' the back lint and scored, obtaining the lead for the first time. Otago 12, Canterbury 13. D. Adams equalised with a fine shot (13 all). Brilliant interceptions set the Otago team again, in motion, but D. Adams was penalised in the circle line. Canterbury carried play to its goal-mouth, where R. Cursons netted just on the call of time. The final score was:Canterbury . - - - 14 goals. Otago 13 goals. LOCAL TEAM OUTCLASSED MATCH AGAINST AUCKLAND Otago showed a falling-off of form In its game against Auckland, although neither team reached the standard of play displayed in the morning. The team was disorganised during the course of the garpe, this affecting the confidence of the players. The game was closely contested in the first half, although Auckland’s accurate shooting obtained for it a lead of four goals at half time. The second half of the game was marked by the wonderful shooting of M. Tangye (Auckland), who scored repeatedly, and by the inability of the Otago forwards to find the ring Otago lost the toss, but had the throw-off, "and in three swift passing movements Otago scored a beautiful goal. E. Sinclair repulsed Auckland’s attacking movement, but the forwards could not work the ball into goal. M Everton cleared, and a bright movement by Auckland resulted in a score. Good combined play followed but inaccurate shooting on the part of the forwards spoiled the movements. M. Hirst (Auckland) cleared brilliantly, but Otago returned to the attack and again failed at goal. Auckland carried play quickly down field. M. Tangye netting Auckland 2. Otago 1. G. McAuslin was responsible for the next opening D Adams netting a beautiful goal. M Tangye scored again for Auckland, and a clever movement by J. Clayton and D. Adams resulted in the score being again equalised at 3 all. J. McLean captured, but the referee’s ruling of a throw up resulted in Auckland gaining possession and M. Tangye scoring from the pass. Auckland 4. Otago 3. A stoppage of five minutes was hem owing to a collision. Auckland caught Otago out of position. M. Tangye netting and adding two more goals before Otago scored. Auckland 7, Otago 3. Otago returned to the attack, and excellent combined work resulted in JClayton and D. Adams scoring. Auckland 7. Otago 5. M. Tangye scored again, but Otago lost an opportunity through a penalty for standing outside the court. Play was carried to Auckland’s goal area, where M. Tangye again converted. Auckland 9. Otago 5. D. Adams scored from the next throw off. the movement showing force and thought, and J. Miles added another goal for Auckland. Auckland 10. Otago 6. Otago showed improved form towards the close of the game, and a speedy, spectacular movement originating in the defence third, gave R. Parke another opportunity to score. WEST COAST The game between Otago Minor and West Coast was won by West Coasl. whose experience in junior tournament play was a decided asset. The Otago players played nervously at the commencement of the game, but showed

an improvement in the second half, in which there was a number of bright patches of play. The score at half time was: West Coast 12. Otago Minor 5. Scoring in the second half vyas similar to that of the first, despite the improved standard of play on the part of Otago. The final score was: West Coast .. .. 24 goals. Otago Minor .. .. 9 goals.
