GARDENING CLUB

ROSE-PRUNING DEMONSTRATION The Dunedin Gardening Club met at Mrs Orr Campbell’s garden for the annual rose-pruning demonstration. The president (Mr J. Passmore) explained the various operations fully, and then gave a practical demonstration in which he first removed the dead and useless wood and the weak growth, He then cut out all cross branches to open up the centre of the plant- and ; then pruned the remaining branches to a- good, strong bud, taking an outside bud where possible. He also-dealt with thtf pruning of climbers, ramblers and other varieties, and also the planting of roses. The roots he ■aid should be pruned back, all broken or damaged roots being removed. The roots should be carefully spread and planted with , the union with the stock well below the surface of the soil. : A day when the soil was fairly dry and workable should be chosen. Firm planting was also essential. v On the motion of Colonel Barclay, votes of thanks were accorded to Mrs Campbell for the use of her garden «nd ner hospitality, and to Mr Passmore for his demonstration.
