HIGHER INCOME TAX
REAL EFFECT OF NEW RATES GOVERNMENT “ CAMOUFLAGE n (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 24. For the first time in the history of New Zealand, those with of less than £4 a week were now liable for income tax, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Adam , Hamilton) during the debate on the Finance Bill in the House of Representatives to-day. This further burden was being placed on all people, including those who were least able to bear it. “ The reduction of the income tax minimum to £2OO was introduced under a smoke screen,” Mr Hamilton said. “It was stated in the Budget that this would result in dragging into the taxation net single men without dependents, but that will not be the effect of it. It is just camouflage. The real effect will be that every taxpayer, whether married or single, will have to pay additional income tax.
“As in other things, the Government is not anxious to' state the position frankly.” Mr Hamilton concluded. “The Government knows that when you increase taxation you have to strike the main blow at the large groups of income tax payers, and they are all among the lower and average incomes.”
