BUILDINGS IN RABAUL ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE CANBERRA, Aug. 23. (Received Aug. 24, at 0.5 a.m.) A Rabaul message reports that the W. R. Carpenter Company's store, a three-storey building, was destroyed by fire to-day. Most of the local records relating to expropriated German properties was also consumed. However, the main records; relating to these properties, of an aggregate value of £2,500,000, are housed at Canberra. Carpenter's premises burned like tinder. Fire also destroyed the adjoining premises of a local baker, a dentist, • nolicitor, and an accountant. The damage is astimatad at £60,000.
